the change was in 1956

I misunderstood the question... I thought they were asking when it went from the yellow-gold (second pic) to the bright yellow we seem to see now.

While we’re nitpicking, when did we go to 5 stripes on the pants instead of 3 like the jerseys?

Think that was Curley. Amazing what becomes “tradition” isn’t it?
Cannon’s pant stripes look better. Pants should match helmet. Period.

They are hands down the best looking uniforms in college football. Yellow and blue (or whatever colors you want to call them) are just two colors that work well with each other and look awesome, especially strong on the TV screen

And in the Burrow highlight film, our purple looks super blue at times. I know this has been pointed out before.

Even with all the advancements in television over the years, purple is still, as it has always been, difficult to replicate on video. That accounts for a lot of the variations you see on the TV and old highlight films. Light source plays into it as well, be it man made, sunlight, or diffused sunlight. The purple object matters, too. Light is absorbed into purple shoulder stripes or a purple jersey, but it reflects off a purple helmet stripe.

It was after the 1971 season, the same year the Tigers got rid of the numbered helmets (a bad idea IMO).

The pants and headgear were most definitely a yellow-orange hue like Yellow cab or a school bus. They're substantially lighter nowadays.

So you don't believe what others in this thread are saying about light source? You fully believe LSU changed the color to more canary yellow and lavender?

The early 90s I believe

Wasn't there in the Hodson days

But you can see it here with Loup in the 90s

Late 60's was still old gold
Not the old gold from before 1956. That was still the Dietzel gold that was not as bright as the almost florescent yellow we have now, but not the old gold being talked about here.

I wonder if part of the issue is the stadium lights. As I remember, back in the 80's those lights were pretty much yellow instead of white. It gave everything a tint, the grass looked like a yellowish green, etc.
You put pure purple under a yellow light, it looks brown. You put blue under it, it looks ... purple.

This is a good point. I have a purple Russell Athletic jersey like we wore in the 90s and a Nike jersey from what we wear now. The 90s jersey is a little darker shade of pruple but nothing crazy.

There's no lavender in LSU's color canon. That's ridiculous.

When we went through orientation for Tiger Band they told us the band uniforms are gold and navy blue pants because under the lights the navy looks purple

I can’t believe there isn’t anyone in this thread that that isn’t old enough to remember, 1957 was the last year of the “old gold” uniforms and 1958 the yellow gold pants and helmets began.

I didn't know that we did. I thought the story was we got our colors from leftover Mardi Gras decorations (which also uses "yellow gold")?
