And in the Burrow highlight film, our purple looks super blue at times. I know this has been pointed out before.

I didn't know that we did. I thought the story was we got our colors from leftover Mardi Gras decorations (which also uses "yellow gold")?

I read that the classic late 50's teams were the darker gold.
Probably sometime in the mid/late 60's or so, I imagine the lighter color translated better to B&W tv, etc.

I don't know anything as fact, just guessing

I think Paul Dietzel did it in 1957. If wrong then I am sure someone will correct me.

I wish we would go back to royal purple and old gold. I do not like lavender and canary yellow.

I have a Billy Cannon doll from 1959 that has the yellow gold on it, so it must pre date that.

But that was like in 1901 or some early year like that. Before the purple and gold I believe LSU was blue and white. Kentucky colors.

Colors and templates changed after the 1956 season

Here you have the old template and old traditional gold in a 1956. See Jim Taylor #42.

Lsu vs Texas from 1957. You can see the template change
