PG&E is in the predicament it’s in for bending knee to brain-dead politicians. So now the politicians want to take complete control of the pile of shite and light it into a complete dumpster fire. I’m investing in a generator.

The legion of elected officials supporting a plan to turn beleaguered PG&E into a customer-owned cooperative has grown five-fold with representatives from 58 cities and 10 counties now pledging support, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo announced Thursday.

Unreliable money hole incoming.

I suspect PG&E will be happy to go co-op and get out of the financial mess they are in.
It is a stupid idea but PG&E would just as soon give it to the people than to let the politicians continue to push them to ruin.
Bet you rates go up, salaries go up and political patronage goes up.

There is absolutely no right answer to any of that state's problems anymore.

Public utilities are managed better than IOU’s. By every metric out there. This is a good thing for those cities.
What happens when the public utility causes a fire that causes billions of dollars of damage? Honestly asking?

Illinois is dealing with all kinds of issues with ComEd, the private utility. Corruption, failure keep up the grid, closing a nuclear plant. I agree, Coop agreements are a great option.

We have a,lot of co-ops in Mississippi. They work great. Just means the customers are the owners and everyone gets a small dividend check each year.
The worst electric company around here is Mississippi Power.

It’s a fricking utility
The hyperbole on here never ceases to amaze

About 50% of the population in the US is supplied by an electric cooperative.
Stop with the hyperbole.

If the politicians will start letting the utility cut the trees touching the lines that start the fires, then it could work. But if California insists on keeping the (pseudo) environmental laws that preclude utilities from managing vegetation, nothing will change.
If the state let PG&E manage the trees in the first place, California wouldn’t be in this situation.

When I think of public takeover, I think government takeover.
Turning it into a co-op should be considered.
A lot of people love credit unions compared to big private banks. Co-ops are basically the utility equivalent of a credit union.
The concept of a private company having a government-provided monopoly has never set will with me. And lines and poles utilities probably can't move to a multi-provider model. (unlike electric generation and providing juice to the poles).

The environmental policies that these same politicians put in place is what has PG&E the dumpster fire it is. Giving even more control to call the shots is the equivalent of adding gasoline to said dumpster fire.
