The US government needs to learn the saying "not my problem".

No.

And as a veteran no.

And as a father of a current spec ops soldier. No.

And as an American in general no.

So pretty much no.

Maybe not military service, but some sort of mandatory civil service would probably do this country good.

Well, that is one way to get them out of their parent's basement/house. The military is not going to turn guy's that wear tight jeans and carry purses into men. Sorry to break the news to you.

We outspend nearly the entire world on military. We don't need anything, especially something as stupid and illegal as mandatory service.

Mandatory military service is wildly un-American

We have MORE than enough military service that can be executed by people age 18-20 both domestically as well as around the world.

no we don’t

Mandatory service is not a good idea and it would weaken our military. 70% of our youngsters are too fat, stupid, or mentally challenged join in the first place mandatory service for the remaining 30% would be a disaster. We have too many frick ups and retards in our ranks as is with a volunteer force. I could not imagine having to deal with people who do not want to be there and feel like they are being forced to serve.

I'd be in favor of giving options after HS. 2 years military or 3 years in the Peace Corps. Something along those lines.

Just what this country needs, even more 18-year-old men dying for Israel.

Kind of goes against the founding fathers' point of having no standing army, doesn't it?

32 year vet here, retired in 2017.

There is still a ton of “fat” in all services (my experience is mostly AF). Branches could easily the reorganized and the same mission (or more) get done with 3/4 or less of the current troops. This is even more true at our bigger expeditionary bases in the Middle East.
