List is what it is. I haven't seen half of the movies on that list

My top five in no particular order:

Hell or High Water
The Fighter
Gone Girl
The American
Sicario

Phantom Thread

Looked tedious AF in the trailer. Nothing but Oscar fodder from the moment it was greenlit.

You obviously don't watch many "Oscar" movies. Phantom Thread is genuinely bizarre.

Obviously a list created by some pretentious art house snob.

I watch a lot of movies and I’ve never heard of many on the list.

First, most of these are popular indies that made money and/or were nominated for Oscars. Hardly the stuff of snobbery.

Second, it's from a website with a team of contributors, not some random blog. These sites poll their writers and they typically weigh the positions of films in the poll results. It's likely that Cameraperson, the most obscure film on the list, made it because it was one writer's #1. It likely made it onto zero other lists from the group.

Unrelated. Why do people here hate Boyhood so much?

The lead was unlikeable and people like to make fun of the whole it took 12 years to make gimmick.

I enjoyed the movie though and thought Patricia Arquette was great.

Isn't that part of the point? Aren't teenagers generally unlikable?

Probably because it gets overhyped due to the way it was made. It was a great achievement. But if we’re talking the actual movie, I thought it was just pretty good at best. Have no desire to watch it again

Finally watched Inside Llewyn Davis after this thread convinced me. Great film. Classic dark humor that the Coens are known for. Carey Mulligan was fantastic in her few scenes.

When wes craven won an MTV movie award for scream he said this is why we go to the movies in the first place.

I went through that list and alot of them looked or sounded dull, depressing or waaaaay too thoughtful.

Well frick that.

Movies should be fun, funny, exciting, horny, captivating, scary and most of all, escapism.

Art movies and character studies are almost always a disappointment.

Also, too bad Charles Manson didn't live to see and comment on Hollywood. His thoughts on it would've been pure gold.

Sweeping generalities about what makes movies good are always stupid. (see what I did there?)

But for real, way to say that about a bunch of films you haven't actually seen.

I haven't seen anyone 'overrate' it since the initial reviews. Every time it's mentioned now everyone piles on it as fast as they can.

Ready Player One would be on my list. That was a movie that I went in with low expectations and left very impressed.

Clearly, Tree of Life is number one and it isn't even remotely close.

I proclaimed that back in 2011 and will continue to proclaim it til the day I die. I was mocked relentlessly by the uncultured here at that time.

I would argue more. Tree of Life isn't just the best film of the 2010s; it's also the greatest film ever made.
