Indiana Jones Opening Scenes

Yesterday one of the channels was playing all three Indiana Jones movies back to back.
I've seen them all many many times, but hey, I figured I'd bounce back and forth between that the NFL during commercials.
The opening scene of Raiders may be one of the greatest of all time. The mood, the mystery, the "adventure". It's all right there, perfection.
Raiders
Then, you get this crap from Temple:
Anything Goes
A musical? A dream sequence-esque musical??? Even as a kid, being totally stoked that I was watching the sequel to my favorite movie, I was thinking "what is this shite?"
Once the action starts and Indy is fighting for his life while trying to get the antidote it gets a little better. But then fricking Short Round shows up and it's back to "what the frick?"
Finally, we have Last Crusade. And we're back to a good opening. We have wilderness, desert instead of jungle, beautiful vistas, that balancing rock that is just badass, and what's this, some origin story content? Sweet!
Arches National Park
Temple of Doom is considered the worst of the three Indiana Jones movies, and wow, watching them back to back really drives that point home.
A MUSICAL???? What were they thinking????

One of the GOAT movie lines:

Naw, I'd totally bang Kate Capshaw. But then I'd ghost her.

I'm not the biggest Temple of Doom fan, but the opening scene is better than you give it credit for. There's good action.
If you watch it right after Raiders, I can see why you'd think it pales. Raiders's opening scene really might be the GOAT.
The biggest problem with the opening of ToD is also the biggest problem with the movie. Willie is one of the most annoying characters in cinema history and the movie constantly shoves her in your face.

Spielberg was just trying to get laid. Just like many men, he did what he had to do to make that happen such as putting Kate Capshaw front and center in the opening. Wouldn't be the first instance of a guy doing something illogical in hopes of getting his pickle wet. No need to analyze it any further...and it worked!

the hell? That opening was outstanding. You've got Indy meeting wiht some bad hombres in this club dealing some weird shite around that lazy susan. Indy has a secret insider working for him. Indy drinks poison. He throws a flaming skewer right through dude's chest. Chaos ensues. He runs behind that big rolling wheel thing and crash lands outside into a waiting car driven by a preteen.
If your whole annoyance with it is "I don't like singing" that's fine, but that's more of a personal thing IMO, it doesn't really detract from the opening in general.

Once the musical number is over and Indy shows up, then has his duel of wits with Lao, yeah, that's cool. But the dance number is just not the way an Indiana Jones movie should set the tone.
And frick Short Round. His every line is cringe worthy.

I think about that weird "whisht-whisht" neck thing Belloq does all of the time.

First one is great the other two sucked. Pure money grabs.

Subtle, but I like it.

You left off the real GOAT opening scene:

I like Temple but it is the weakest of the three. But it’s still a great movie though.
And the opening is great, minus the singing obviously. But that’s basically just the opening credits though. And like someone above said, once the singing is over the opening is great with the idol, the diamond, the poison, etc.

Guess I'm in the minority, but I enjoyed Temple of Doom.

As a kid I hated the beginning of Temple if Doom. It has very much grown on me since. Still not a big fan of Short Round though.

I think they are all really cool openings. Raiders is easily the best, but I like both of the others.
The Temple scene has lots of action, double crossing, a cool setting, etc. Yeah, there is singing, but it is set in a nightclub and works with the scene, it isn't like Indy breaks into song.

I think my favorite part of the opening of The Temple of Doom, is that the club they were in was called Club Obi-Wan.

I don't want to be overly harsh - as a stand alone film, ToD was okay. It was just slightly off angle from what Raiders' fans were looking for and bordered on parody in that context. I find it fun, but I've watched it maybe 3 times, compared to probably 15 or 20 times for Raiders and at least 6 or 7 Last Crusade. Overall, the film works, but as you say, it is sandwiched between the 2 clearly superior films of the three, so that hurts it by comparison.
And, Short Round wasn't the problem - more of a symptom.

That's because of her tits, and her husband is the director.
