When did Disney get so expensive?

We passing around the idea of maybe going back for Mardi Gras.
For 4 people:
Four nights at Pop Century, four days at parks with hopper, and two quick service meals/ two snacks.
$4000
Add in a cheap flight with SW, it $5000+.
This exact same trip 3-4 years ago was $3500 with flight, and five days at the parks

Dining plan is not worth it. Especially if only the quick service plan.

It’s ridiculous but they charge what people will pay and this generation of parents eat it up (and a lot of them once a year). They could keep raising prices, and that place will be max capacity in peak season.

We don't do the dining plan, but if you're a competitive eater, the most expensive plan can save you money. It will be far too much food for like 99.8% of humans, so it's still not worth it.
However, it's damned near impossible to get your money's worth from the cheapest dining plan. You would have to make a conscious effort to search out the most expensive eligible snacks and quick service meals and only order those. Pay out of pocket for your meals. We got the free dining plan once, and I couldn't eat all the food. My wife couldn't come close.

I actually disagree. I believe the DDP is 100% worth it.

Look into becoming a Disney Vacation Club Member. You get discounts on Annual Passes, and shopping.

If you go to Disney every 3-4 years, you shouldn’t be paying retail.
Look into rewards, perks, etc. Travel smarter.

The flights back to NOLA on southwest are where they really get you.

We went to Disney World for Mardi Gras in both 2017 and 2018. 2017 we stayed on property and 2018 we stayed off property. I honestly didn't find staying off property to be that much more difficult and it was a significant cost saving.
-Book a condo on Airbnb
-Buy a few groceries to eat a cheap breakfast each morning before heading to the park.
-Don't buy the dining plan. Everyone acts like the food at Disney is some amazing culinary experience but it's not. Skip the expensive sit down meals (maybe do a character dining for the kids) and save a few bucks by eating quick service meals.
On another note, half of Louisiana goes to Disney World for Mardi Gras. This year we went to Disneyland and it was awesome because hardly anybody was there at that time of year. Yeah, there's only two parks but we still had a blast.
You can find some dirt cheap flights to LAX around that time. Countless hotels within walking distance of Disneyland at very affordable rates.

Dining plan is a scam. Staying onsite is overly expensive and overrated too. You don’t wanna pay their price but you aren’t looking at other options either.

I can't really recall a time when it wasn't expensive. Even in the 80's when mom and dad took us, I remember them talking about how expensive it was.
There are ways to reduce the cost. Friends of ours just got back from a week there with their 3 kids and he said the trip was only $2500. They drove, stayed off property at a VRBO, ate all meals in the rented condo except lunch in the parks, etc. He did say though the planning ate up a lot of their time, even with his wife who stays home doing the bulk of it. So there's that.

We just booked something very similar for Mardi Gras.
5 Day, single park pass, meal plan (1 sit down, 1 quick serve) at Pop Century. It was ~3400 for my wife, my daughter (under 2) and we have another group of three coming.

Ditch the dining plan. If you're with kids they can usually split meals and even eat off an adult portion.
Order stuff to eat a quick breakfast in the room through Amazon Prime Now. (cereal, fruit, breakfast bars). Saves time AND money.
You really only need to eat one full meal a day. The portions are pretty big.
Do more snacking throughout the parks that sit down meals.
I'd also look into ditching the Park Hopper but I may get roasted on here. It's too much of a hassle and a time waste to switch parks mid day. I'd honestly pick a park to skip (AK, Epcot or HS) and do 2 days in MK.

You have a few things working against you.
1) Mardi Gras is no longer the "cheap" time to go. It's a great time to go if you like constantly seeing LSU and Saints t-shirts in the parks. But the parks are pretty crowded during Mardi Gras now.
2) Prices have gone up with the additions to the parks such as Toy Story Land and Star Ward Land. Also, a ton of work done on new roads and highways, someone has to pay for that.
3) Pop is charging a premium right now, compared to other values, because of the gondola.
4) Park hopper is really getting expensive, especially for shorter trips.

I think you are booking too far out. Wait until the fall. Disney does a lot of deals now for the next season, so right now in summer they are running deals for Fall. This fall they will do winter and maybe spring. Then late fall run deals for Spring.
There's no reason to book Disney more then 6 months out when you can book your meal reservations. But even those are easy to get closer in. Disney made the meal reservations 6 months out to push people to make reservations before they run their big discounts for the season.

check out these guys. They run agency exclusives. I just priced an October trip, and their agency exclusive is about $1500 less than going through disney with the 20% off room deal.
They don't always have them, but when they do, they are substantially cheaper.
I think Mardi Gras being end of February is going to mean no discounts.
