No, we defined poverty high so we could make folks more dependent on government giveaways.
Furthermore, if you raised the minimum raise to 15 dollars WalMart would raise their prices accordingly, you’d pay more to shop, your taxes would remain the same and the govt. would raise the poverty level.

We are not subsidizing corporations, what a moronic comment. It's like you just consume cable news garbage and spew it out. It's the other way around, Wal-Mart is subsidizing the government by paying them WAYYYYY more than they're worth. We know this to be true, because that employee is making more than their skills would otherwise be worth if not for the price floor.
Edit: We are going to push so many people onto wellfare if something like $15 hour minimum wage is enforced. It will also push down the hours hard working employees that earn OT to transfer the funds to pay for other workers wages. I have not heard one non-emotional argument as to why this is a good idea.

Personally I hate it. There is then no incentive for a waiter to do his job well since he already knows his wage.
Waiters in the rest of the world seem to do just fine.
How about that cook? He is the one making your food. You think he needs some incentive to make it good?

Maybe the fattys will quit fastfood when its $15 for a combo meal.

Waiters in the rest of the world don't have to pay for Healthcare or college either so you're not comparing apples to apples.

The government always needs a dependent class.

A $15 minimum wage will crush small businesses, result in massive job loss, and lead to higher consumer prices.
But at least liberals will feel good (at least until they lose their jobs).

You're also going to increase automation and increase poverty for everybody making in between $7.25-$15/hour. It's inevitable. They aren't worth more now for economic and market specific reasons that the government has no control over.

I have no problem with minimum wage being indexed for inflation. I think that would put it around $11 now, which seems alright.
We are living in a society, everything isn’t going to be free market. There will be guardrails, subsidies and safety nets.
ETA: and if it increases automation, so be it. World will get there eventually, might as well be first and figure out how to go forward

Alot of minimum wage workers will learn the hard way that they are not worth $15/hr to their employer. Wages are a price just like any other item in the market. I'm not going to pay more for something than I believe it is worth, and neither will employers.
If a Walmart employee was skilled enough to earn more than their actual wage, then they should be able to get a job at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, or any of the other stores willing to pay a higher wage for a more skilled worker.
"You cannot make a man worth a given amount by making it illegal for anyone to offer him anything less. You merely deprive him of the right to earn the amount that his abilities and situation would permit him to earn, while you deprive the community even of the moderate services that he is capable of rendering"

Again, the minimum wage in 1969 was effectively 54% higher than today. THIS is the problem. I agree $15 is probably too much and a seemingly arbitrary number, but at least put it on an even playing field to the guys flipping burgers before we landed on the moon

From my end it's a terrible idea... we employ laborers that make under $15 a hour at my company... my boss said if min. wage go to $15 we(field supervisors, superintendents, project managers) going back in the field... so for selfish reasons I don't want it to go up... but I can understand the other side too...

Considering restaurants will end up having to pay more to employees thus raising their prices, how will this affect tipping in today’s society?
Would they be part of this plan? Currently restaurants can pay a much lower wage as long as tips make up the difference.
It's like $2.13 an hour or something. So yes, if they move from 2.13 to 15 an hour, that's going to raise prices and dramatically lower tips.
Posted on 7/19/19 at 1:54 pm to Geauxld Finger
I like it. Lets get rid of tipping.

Maybe not to $15 an hour, but at least to a threshold where a person working a full time job would not be eligible for welfare.
What is poverty? It is the lack of money needed to meet basic expenses.
Raising the min wage will result in price increases. They will be roughly the same as the market ALWAYS find equilibrium. So these workers - now at their $15 an hour wage - will still be just as poor. They will still lack the money needed to meet basic expenses.
We shouldn't have ANY min wage workers in this country, outside of maybe some teenagers. Automate the shite out of these types of jobs, and focus on people learning new skills needed for higher-pay jobs.
