Sounds like this will be proposed federally (and ultimately voted down by the senate for now) but there is a bill proposed to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. Some states are doing this on their own.

Considering restaurants will end up having to pay more to employees thus raising their prices, how will this affect tipping in today’s society?

Will wait staff still assume they are entitled to 20% or greater since they are technically now paid a living wage? Or will and additional 10% suffice? Curious as to how people would react to this as the cost will ultimately get passed down to the consumer

Fast food places will eventually go automated.

Minimum wage is a social construct.

If servers are paid $15 a hour, then the European policy of not tipping will take effect.

I always think it’s horseshite how restaurants get away with underpaying employees because they will “make it up in tipping.”

Why not $50/hr?

Why does the govt want people to have to scrape by on $15?

You already know...all the meals will be more expensive but there will be no tipping anymore.

Personally I hate it. There is then no incentive for a waiter to do his job well since he already knows his wage. I prefer cheaper cost of meals and being able to tip appropriately based on the level of service.

Fine. Less people will be hired and automation/AI will rapidly increase.

Tipped Wage Employees have their own Minimum Wage (it's like $2.25/hr)

If it went $15 across the board tips would simply go away

I could see many going to drive-thru only as well.

They make $15 around here, and, yes, they still want their tips.

Okay this will be an unpopular opinion here, but I think we should raise the minimum wage. Maybe not to $15 an hour, but at least to a threshold where a person working a full time job would not be eligible for welfare.

What pisses me off is places like walmart that literally have food stamp applications in their employee breakrooms. If you work full time you shouldn't have to be on fricking foodstamps. Basically we are subsidizing giant corporations like Walmart with our tax money so they can continue paying low wages.

I hate how tipping has become mandatory because of this. It's a bonus for hard work.
