Yeah I don’t get it either. The Toyota Sienna is as fast as most SUVs, more comfortable and more useful.
And the SUV isn’t fooling anyone. She’s a soccer mom, not an intrepid BASE jumping adrenaline junkie.

I'll bite.

My wife drives one. Soon after she and I got married several years ago she needed a new vehicle and wanted an SUV. So she bought a used 4runner. It was a great car that never gave us any trouble. Her family is from out of state so it was easy to load up us and the dog an head out. Then we had two kids and the space in the 4runner began to get tight. It was big enough to pack everything, but we really had to cram. I never realized how much crap you have to pack for young kids before I had them.

In any event, the 4runner was getting old and she wanted a new SUV. The first requirement was a larger car. We looked at virtually every SUV made from Mazda, to BMW, Chevy Traverse, etc. Eventually she settled on the Yukon and it's been a great car. It's got enough room to pack every thing for family trips without issue and is also just a really nice ride. No complaints. Did she "need" a Yukon? Of course not. But we didn't really like the look of the "car based" SUV (which almost all are these days) and it still has enough strength to easily tow a trailer if need be.

In short: I thought it was too big for our needs when we bought it, but I'm glad to have it now

We live in one of the neighborhoods you described, and my wife (no pics) drives a white Suburban. We have 4 kids and travel during the spring and summer to AAU basketball games. The Suburban provides the much needed space for our family and luggage. Why does it bother you what suburban moms drive?

My wife and I bought an LTZ Suburban in 09 and when we had 3 kids and 1 on the way. I think it was $54k. Put about $20k down and paid off in 3 years. Now we have 3 kids from 17 to 8 and finally traded in the Suburban (only got $8500), put down $25k and bought a beautiful Sapphire Blue Yukon Denali.

We did that because we like having a very nice and comfortable big vehicle that we feel safe in. And because we can. How many kids do you have BTW?

found the guy with the cliché response when he gets called out. and, in point of fact, I live on 4 acres in the sticks. In the "standard" Acadian style home, with a "cookie cutter wrap around" front porch that I'm sure you would scoff at given your insecurity. and I own a P/U truck. My wife drives said generic white suburban, but not cause shes a travel ball mom. Shes a large animal vet and needs the suburban for her vet box, DR equipment, and ultrasound. And cause she...wait for it...LIKES IT. Shocking isn't it? and we have no kids. Just me and wifey, 8 dogs, 4 horses, 3 (sometimes 2) cats and our little slice of South La. heaven. go get some more ink and drink a craft beer. You'll feel cooler and more unique

Plenty of room for the kids, they’re large and they feel safest in them and feel they’ll protect their kids the best in case of an accident. On top of being a status symbol that they can afford a 80k dollar SUV

I know this because my mom drove them when I was a kid. Soon as me and my sister were off to college she traded in for a sporty BMW convertible car

Ummm, it's ten years old likely with a pile of miles on it.

(And the dealer will probably sell it for 12k)

They are basically cool looking minivans.

Road yachts

The different “brands” under one company are interesting

I got Mercury Mariner. What is the difference between that and the Ford Escape? The grill and the logo.

I actually Got the Mariner cheaper for some reason even though that used to be a slightly nicer brand than just ford.

Didn’t think your wife’s size was the issue. Honestly didn’t see that coming.

As stated, momma bear feels her cubs are safer in a large suv AND it is one of the cheaper makes and models in the status symbol road yacht category. Keeping in mind what an earlier poster said about no one is paying near MSRP for a Yukon / Tahoe. Like $10K less if timing is right and haggling skills are on point.
