I wish people had the same approach for immigration
Sadly, many do not.

I assume you are white and this is your privilege talking. Lots of non-whites don’t understand interest and debt repayment and stuff that your real estate magnate/investment banker father taught you.

I have over $40k in loans from my Masters. I’m on an income based repayment plan. I haven’t consolidated my loans because my loans are forgiven after 25 years of payments on this plan if I have to pay that long. And they’ll work with me if I lose my job. I have not deferred my loans at any time. I’m hoping I don’t have to.
Still, my minimum payment is $320/month. That’s not unrealistic or unaffordable. When I made less, my monthly payment was like $160/mo. I’ve paid off one of the six loans I took out already. I made damn well sure I did not take out a private loan.
It’s ridiculous some of the decisions people are making regarding these loans. Fed Loans will work with you provided you update your Income Based Repayment Plan annually.

Sounds like white privilege to me, amirite?

How is it 320/month exactly? At that rate, you'd have it paid off in 11 or so years.

The average student loan amount is roughly the same as a low to medium price auto. I don't get the angst from those who have a moderate amount of student loan debt.
A lot of it’s coming from the ones who got worthless degrees and now can’t get a decent paying job.

26 months of busting my arse to pay off my student loans. What about people like me, Bernie?

Not that I really support wiping clean so much debt, but I have to ask, why does everyone ask “what about me?” regarding paid student debt, but no one asks the same question about TOPS?
TOPS came into existence one year after I graduated. They didn’t go back and give me TOPS money that I would have earned had it taken effect four years earlier.
If you already paid off your loans, great. The issue is about people with loans. Not you.
Again, I don’t support Bernie’s bill. But I just find this particular argument against it to be weak. Having had loans doesn’t entitle you to anything. Just as being born too early for TOPS entitles you to nothing. You just have to suck it up and realize you’re irrelevant to the issue at hand.

i can answer that specifically for me. if i was slumming it pre-TOPS like i did post-TOPS, i wouldn't have been paying tuition at LSU anyway

the issue is changing the system in mid stream for people with direct associations (student loans)
the TOPS argument isn't really comparable b/c you didn't lose anything (because you didn't have the option to)
comparing people with student loans to others with student loans is much more comparable/like-to-like
my "i wouldn't have gone to shitty LSU" is similar to your argument and i agree it's not a good one. it's just me rage quitting life

since its income based, if he got a job flipping burgers then his required payments wouldn't be very much. If he flipped burgers for 25 years then likely his loans would still have a balance so then they would be forgiven. At his current income he will pay off the loans before the 25 years.

I can only speak for myself but I made deliberate choices to pay off my loans as soon as possible. I sacrificed going out with friends, living in a nicer place, or saving for retirement and investing to do this.
Had I known that the loans would just be forgiven later on I may have made different decisions.
The best compromise would be to lower the rates on the outstanding debt. The rates the feds charging is insane for debts you cannot bankrupt. I am helping my mum pay off her old loans and they range from 6% to 8.25%.

humorously, my dad claimed me for the first 2 years of college (he was paying my health insurance) and i couldn't get any local financial aid. i took it in and gave them my dad's tax documents. The financial aid officer said, sorry you're white and a male with a well off family.

Correct...and I've been downvoted 5 times.

I think it's pretty telling (and amazing) that people are more pissed about missing out on this opportunity than they are at the "reality" that they would be continually paying for the education of all others moving forward.
It's a sad state of affairs, IMO.

I don't think that is the point. The point is socialism always rewards the irresponsible at the expense of the responsible.

A little over $95k paid off, all by myself, with no help 26 months of busting my arse to pay off my student loans. What about people like me, Bernie?
Wouldn't you receive all of that money back?
If not, why not?

100%. I will be furious if by some small chance this kind of bullshite happens. Worked my arse off for 6 years to kill a six-figure debt. All taxed.
