I saw John Wick 3 yesterday and enjoyed the heck out of what they were going for. I thought some of the world building actually made it a bit cheesier. While I really liked the majority of it, I did come away had just left it at the first movie though. I expect downvotes for this opinion.

Then this morning Pirates if the Caribbean 3 was on and I was thinking that they never really needed to make one past the original. I would have rather they just left it at that.

Made me think of good movies that got unneeded sequels.

List what you got :

Matrix
Jurassic Park
PotC
Transformers ( I still enjoyed the first one at the time)
Star Wars outside of the original trilogy
Predator
Taken
Saw

Listing SW kinda defeats your premise.

Anyway.

Men in Black probably though I did enjoy 3... nothing can match the first. The second was total trash.

I really hated 1 and 2. Never saw 3. I’m totally fine not knowing how we got there and for the most part what happens in 7-9. And I really love Star Wars.

ETA: maybe I posted in the OP incorrectly. I’d be totally fine if 1-3 and 7-9 never existed. Even though I like TFA. Rogue One and Solo are enjoyable.

Most comedies didn't need a sequel, just blantant cash grabs.

I'll disagree about the Matrix tho, we needed to see humans gain their freedom and defeat the machines. However, the sequels were shite and failed to deliver like the first one.

I’m happier just knowing Neo has the power to beat them and free humans at the end of 1. Seeing it played out didn’t make me any happier.

Has to be the greatest example of taking it too far.

None. The release of a crappy sequel doesn’t make the original disappear.

Jaws - Shark was killed, leave it dead-
Independence Day - Aliens defeated, no one fks with Earth-
Hangover
Terminator - A pregnant Sarah lived, we all could walk away knowing John saved humanity. Don't get me wrong, T2 was great but we could've stopped at 1.
Saw - It was better when Jigsaw was perceived as working alone, we know he was terminally ill and would do his work til he died. No need to keep going -
Jurassic park - 1 and done, lesson learned. Nature finds a way.
Die Hard - John rides off into the sunset with his woman like the cowboy he is. Done.
Predator - Don't fk with Earth
Bill and Ted - They stayed together and saved humanity with their awesome tunes.

Unless it’s designed as a series like Harry Potter, any movie franchise could stop after the first one. T2 is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Super Troopers
4th Indiana Jones movie
Anything after Terminator II
Anything after Die Hard with Vengeance
Boondock Saints
Speed
Matrix

The list would be much longer for unneeded reboots.
