Except when it was going out then they'd offer you $1.

It’s changing rapidly though. Textbook companies are getting into OER. Plus others are offering the Netflix model. You get all your books for two years for like 250. No that requires a university faculty to agree to use textbooks from one publisher, which is problematic. But if they do that 250 is great value.
The market usually works. Not always but usually, and it seems to be working in this case.

Serious question. What would you consider a reasonable cost for the online course, book, workbook etc.? No funny business, just what you need to take the class?

Took a History elective at LSU back in the day. Professor specified some new edition text that just came out. I rolled up in class with a $5 old edition. He questioned me and I asked if history had changed recently. He laughed and I ended up getting an A.

"This is my new edition. It is very slightly different than last year's edition. If you own last year's edition you will not get shite for it selling it back."

Good reply for back then. When we were in school history was unchanging. Today, however, it is constantly being modified to suit the whims of the "offended".

I don’t think the cost is too high it’s more a matter of their pricing strategy. This is a hidden cost in education. Everyone talks tuition and fees, but you’re also being held hostage by books which is not an insignificant sum.

They also will change "10 words" and release a new edition which causes everyone to have to buy new since professors almost always use the most current edition

Had several professors at Bama that would let you know what changed and you could choose between new or old.

Yep, it’s a racket. I believe they also rotate books. That way older books cannot be sold online. I believe the professors get some kind of kickbacks for switching books

There's very few cash in pocket kickbacks, but Ive been invited to some "textbook conventions" where I could bring my family. They are held in desirable locations, as you can imagine.

I don't require my students to buy a textbook. I like to use multiple sources. I make my slide decks and put them on the web for students to download.

Barbes and Noble didn't go the way of Borders not because they have a deal with Starbucks - they went all in on college bookstore contracts and hit big. Textbooks are high profit items. That's why Barnes and Noble has basically taken over the college bookstore market from LSU to junior colleges.

Look at the list of Barnes and Noble college bookstores. You think it makes sense to have a BN at Spring Hill with their 800 students? No, until you realize the profit margin.

When I went to BRCC there was a teacher who had all the students chip in for one book and then he photocopies the needed chapters and handed them out every week. That guy was awesome.

That's actually been pretty common place throughout my time. Basically, "Here's the textbook. New edition is 'x', but any of the last 5 editions should be fine."

Where are you enrolled? I had 2 classes like this in undergrad and 1 in grad school. Fortunately my bound course material
Only cost like $50-$75 a piece.

The paper is so thin it rips constantly too, such a fricking arse raping.

Most of the grad programs have the book costs built in now too, the books are rarely used so instead of the market drying up bc students realize they don’t need the books they just frick you from the source now
