College Textbook Scams

Going back to college to get a masters degree. Now they have this scam going where you have to buy this online access of sorts to participate in the class. The online access is something like $250 + e-book or you can get the textbook for $205 and the online access separately for $199. This basically forces you to purchase the new book because you have to have the “access code” and further lines the pockets and inflated prices.
Also “textbooks” are no longer bound apparently. They are loose leaf papers punched with a three hole binder. Wtf is this shite?

Smart move by the publisher. The universities aren't going to do anything about it.

Yep, it’s a racket. I believe they also rotate books. That way older books cannot be sold online. I believe the professors get some kind of kickbacks for switching books

Been like this for 15 years. Everyone trying to get their piece of the bubble. Higher education is fricked.

I'm guessing it's the reason bama athletes wised up and started fricking the bookstore

Textbooks have been a scam long before I remember. One of our professors made a ‘notes’ book for $100 that supplemented the textbook. We got a bunch of extra credit if we showed proof of purchase.

Endless student loans will do that.

If only you didn't lose your money buying crypto at the top, you would have money for books

Youd think you boomer non traditional students would appreciate the new textbooks
It’s like your binders full of women except with textbooks

This has been going on since Lassie was a puppy.
We sale you a book for $200.00, you use it 3 months and we buy it back for $25.00.
That day we sold our books back was always glorious though

I remember the best professor I ever had at LSU, Benjamin Martin, would use all his own books as the required reading / textbooks for his courses. To avoid the conflict of interest he sponsored a Tiger in Sri Lanka or somewhere like that and at the beginning of the semester would show pictures and talk about how he uses the money to sponsor the Tiger and not for personal profit.

They also will change "10 words" and release a new edition which causes everyone to have to buy new since professors almost always use the most current edition. I actually like this because I buy several textbooks a year to learn new subjects. I get books that are 2 editions old for hardly more than they cost to ship. The latest one is a textbook on electric motor theory, the current edition costs over $400 and I paid $15 shipped for the edition published in 2012.

The OP didn’t even mention the most insidious part:
How hard they try to “bribe” the professors to use their books and put graded parts of the curriculum behind that paywall.
They most certainly still make traditional textbooks.
They are just pushing professors harder on the e-enabled variety

this really ticks me off. I dont use my old books often but I sometimes need to go back to them for reference. E-books are convenient but nothing replaces turning through pages and bookmarking. Loose leaf would not stand up to the test of time

The whole system is a scam. Why would the textbooks be any different?

$25 is too high.
One time they told me they can’t pay me for them, but they will take the books as a “donation.”

But you have to get the books.
A^2+B^2=C^2 is on page 50 on version 29 and 51 on version 30. As if math changes from year to year. I should be able to use the books my parents used.
And when the professor gives HW questions you don’t get credit because the questions get mixed up from one version to the next. It’s a scam.
