Despite steep odds, the leader of a push to boost Louisiana's gasoline tax said Monday winning legislative approval for the plan is feasible. "This is the year," said Erich Ponti, president of a group of about 75 businesses called the Louisiana Coalition To Fix Our Roads. "It doesn't matter that it is an election year," Ponti told the Press Club of Baton Rouge. Motorists pay 38.4 cents per gallon, including 20 cents in state charges. State Rep. Steve Carter, R-Baton Rouge, is the lone sponsor of the coalition-backed bill that would gradually increase the state gasoline tax to 38 cents per gallon, or 56.4 cents in all.

Carter's bill would use 60 percent of the revenue for road and bridge preservation. The other 40 percent would go for high-profile projects, including construction of a new bridge over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge.

So, almost double the current state gas tax?
Seems reasonable with how well our state manages money.

Toll bridge. No taxes. We voluntarily raised taxes 30 years ago for DOTD, and what did that get us in the long run?

man, this is a dead fricking state
when your #1 city's (New Orleans) highest revenue stream comes from tourism, you might be a dead state.

Saban broke Louisiana's fiscal policy.

Straight up theft. These assholes don’t need another penny in taxes until they prove they can properly manage what they have

So doubling the state gas tax? Great idea

oh yeah, they'll fix the bridge before extending the rest of the overpassing interstate from after Acadian to the bridge.

ya'll have no idea how cheap you have had it for years. Welcome to most of the rest of the country's worlds, for many years now.

Where will the money go for taxes we currently pay for gas?
Why do they want sales tax money too!
No tolls?
What projects will be first?
Why isn’t JBE on board?

Louisiana 20%
Kentucky 29%
Arkansas 21.5%
Texas 20%
Florida 28%
Georgia 21%
Mississippi 18%
North Carolina 37%
Tennessee 25%
The proposed tax would eventually put us to the top tier.

Total lies! 60 + 40 = 100%! That does not leave any money to steal! So you know it is a lie!

Jokes on them. We'll all be dead from Global Warming in 2031.

What would that mean in this context? How would you know if they are managing the money properly or not?
I hope not from construction projects because that is the point: inflation has eaten into the gas tax so it just doesn't buy as much as it did 30 years ago.

This is like leaving a dessert with a 400lb person and expecting against all relevant available evidence that he or she won't demolish it before you get back.
The State, like the human hippo with the dessert, has proven time and again it can't handle its shite.
