My daughter has a similar GPA and her practice ACTs and SATs were a little lower, but still in that range. Will be a 4-year varsity letterman in swim (she’s a junior) and has a decent club and work resume. She’s not even competitive for UVA because they cap admissions from the Northern VA area and there are other kids here that are little academic robots. She’ll find a good school, but my point is that the scores you mentioned would have been awesome in the 90s, but these kids today are professional college seekers. It takes more.

And what I’m telling you is that the elite schools get the pick of the top of whites, browns, orange, everyone.

There are great kids who are great people but at that high school age are too shy or reserved to start charities or do some of these other activities that "look good" on a CV.
Service, in addition to academics, tells the school that you are a good person who will be a positive leader.

Exactly. As I said, the SAT and ACT are not necessarily used as they were originally intended.
They actually did at one point use it as a measure of intelligence but not any longer.

Not to mention those kids who have to work, care for family, etc..guess they aren’t good people..

Just save him some time and tell him to send him to LSU. He will have way more fun than going to those snooty places

Great education, great people. My youngest son is set on LSU. He’s a good student but isn’t interested in that other stuff.

I’m thankful I don’t have to go 4 years in a college anywhere today

Well, then there’s no hope for your children, unless they have other influences. The service aspect for a college admission application can not be over emphasized. But this shouldn’t surprise anyone. This is not a modern libral preversion. It is a quintessentially western concept. They don’t award Eagle Scout to the kid who scores the highest on the archery merit badge. Eagle candidacy is judged on the final service project, because the only scouts who deserve to be awarded Eagle are the ones who do their work then turn back and help others. Service demonstrates their character and finishing. Service, in addition to academics, tells the school that you are a good person who will be a positive leader. Having a history of service as a young person can’t hurt, and the absence of service doesn’t help.
So in all seriousness I appreciate the insight regarding the service component.
However, it has been you that have presented it in this thread as a type of box to check and not as altruism. Not me.

32 ACT for a white non-athlete male isn’t going to get you in at those schools.
I know it's been a while, but the ACT only goes to 36, correct? A 32 is in the 97th percentile?

My daughter went to Auburn. She is in her 2nd year of Pharmacy School now.

Was having a few with friends this afternoon and my pal, who has an 18 year old boy who is starting to get his college rejection letters in at a brisk pace, was apoplectic over his son's rejections. I never discussed politics with him before, but always pegged him as a center left person based on some of his habits. He is a middle class guy who is a CPA. This has become a red pill of sorts for him. His son has a 1450 SAT, 32 ACT, 4.3 GPA, is a recently licensed private pilot active in the Civil Air Patrol and a multi-sport letterman at his school and has been rejected from Duke, Princeton and Rice so far. Still waiting on Tulane. LSU is the safety school. He is, of course, a white male.
How many white Americans are waking up to this new reality where merit no longer matters? Will this have an effect on waking up the Gen X'ers whose kids are being shafted by diversity?
It reminded me of this blog post I read a few weeks ago on the topic.
How do you know he wasn't accepted because of diversity? Some of you guys really are the biggest pussies in the world. I'm sorry your elitist fantasy is being ruined.

I found an article that listed these numbers.
In the class of 2018, 1,914,817 students took the ACT.
3,741 made 36 (Perfect Scores)
14,928 made a 35.
21,836 made a 34.
26,930 made a 33.
31,625 made a 32.
37,150 made a 31.
43,824 made a 30.

If your number is correct it would be 94.9%

Apply to Purdue a couple of my kids went there with similar scores. Excellent school, isn't big on diversity for the sake of diversity. has a top 10 ten engineering school with world class facilities and the majority of the engineering professors speaking English as a first language.

This is where I get exceedingly pedantic.
You aren’t facing off against other people in a competition. You’re sending Princeton an academic resume, and saying “gee shucks” if you don’t get in.
And most people who apply just don’t meet their standards. They didn’t have a shot from the start.
That’s not competition, it’s wishful thinking.
And that wishful thinking is what skews their selection rate.

Legacies remain a large part of it. In my class, I think twelve or fourteen people went on to Harvard. Half were legacies.
They were smart capable people, but they didn’t walk on water.

May I suggest your high achieving kids apply to one of the academies. My youngest graduated number 1 in his class with over a 4.5 gpa in 2013 and 34 on his ACT. Senior class president, three sport letterman, Eagle Scout, Senior Patrol Leader, Boys State, and even participated on an overseas trip to Japan between his junior and senior year sponsored by a local industry.
He graduated in 2017 with a Mechanical Engineering degree and currently is a 1LT with no college loan debt and a guaranteed job. He also was paid monthly stipend while in school. He is finishing up training and will be reporting to his first duty station next month.
This year West Point has +/- 1,200 new cadets reporting in July. The other academies will have approximately the same.
Not everyone will carry a rifle as the following branch night numbers at West Point show.
Branch Allocation for the Class of 2018
Branch Night Class of 2018 Results
(NOTE: 70 percent of the Class of 2018 branched combat arms [77 percent of males and 41 percent of females].)
AD - Air Defense Artillery 51
AR - Armor 80
AV - Aviation 92
EN - Engineering 124
FA - Field Artillery 144
IN - Infantry 196
AG - Adjutant General 24
CM - Chemical 14
CY - Cyber 20
FI - Finance 9
MI - Military Intelligence 62
MP - Military Police 18
MS - Medical Services 20
OD - Ordnance 35
QM - Quartermaster 24
SC - Signal Corps 44
TC -Transportation 26
With all that stated he received multiple scholarships from good instate schools. He also applied to Vandy and was put on a waiting list.

4.3 GPA
I have always thought this was incredibly deceptive.
A 4.3 could be an unweighted solid B average or even a C+ average depending on his coursework.
