My son had a 34 ACT, 10 APs w/ all 5 scores on exams, student government VP all 4 years, tons of extracurriculars. Wait listed at Duke, Vanderbilt and UVA. Accepted to UNC Chapel Hill, Tulane, Wake Forest, Colby, and Davidson. He chose Davidson. His heart was set on Duke.

You should have told him to suck a dick or two and write an essay about it.

Schools don’t try and compare a 4.1 at one school versus a 4.5 at another. It is imposiible to compare different schools. Now, something that jumps out at you like a 2.5 would be different. It is the reason, fairly or not, that they put more emphasis on standardized test scores.

No, I went to Bama, dropped out for a few years, and finished at Appalachian State. Finishing 3L at UA Law right now.

I would have gone to Vandy or W&L but I didn't get scholarships and my parents thought I was too wild to justify the expense. They were right.

I love Boone and Watauga County. I studied agroecology (small scale farming, permaculture like stuff) and the farm work itself was nice, but the rest of the curriculum would have made Marx blush with how overtly leftist it was. I did not get along well with a lot of faculty.

I'm going to set up a divorce practice mostly catered to men.

I don't have any debt and, uh, I get a good chunk of money when I finally graduate so I want to do something I think is worthwhile rather than chasing after firm money. I may end up pursuing something else eventually.

Think about it.

You need the ridiculous cultivated high school resume to get into Harvard. You can bet between 2 equal resumes with the only difference being one has some left wing extracurricular or essay, the lefty one is getting in.
Once you get in grade inflation makes it damn near impossible to flunk out.
Once you get out you are connected with an elite degree and in the pool from which all of our leaders are selected.

Conclusion: Our elite leaders are screened based on their high school accomplishments as much as anything.

and people wonder why leadership in DC sucks so bad
