How much gas tax adds to cost of filling up your car in every state?

Not including the cost of crude oil, taxes are the single largest factor in determining how much Americans pay at the pump. Combined, federal and state taxes add more to the price of a gallon of gas than refining costs, retail markup and transportation expenses.
The federal government and state governments use gasoline taxes to fund road construction and repair. Gasoline taxes also help preserve road conditions by making driving, which wears down on roadways, more expensive.
The federal government levies an 18.4 cent tax on every gallon of gasoline sold in the United States. On top of that, each state imposes its own tax – and in almost every case, the state tax is higher than the federal tax. A handful of states charge more than double the national tax level.

How much a state chooses to tax a gallon of gas does indeed appear to affect residents’ driving habits. Nationwide, the typical motorist drives 14,318 miles a year. In seven of the 10 states with the lowest gas taxes, people tend to drive more. Meanwhile, people on average drive less in the eight of the 10 states with the highest gas taxes.
To identify the states with the highest and lowest gas taxes, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed state and average local gas taxes from the American Petroleum Institute. Average gas prices as of Jan. 11, 2019 for each state came from AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report. We also reviewed average annual vehicle miles traveled in each state from the Federal Highway Administration.

43. Louisiana
• State gas tax: 20.0 cents per gallon.
• Gas price as of mid-Jan. 2019: $1.92 per gallon. (5th lowest)
• State taxes as pct. of gas price: 10.4 percent (12th lowest)
• Annual miles traveled per driver: 14,478 (22nd lowest)
Care to guess which state is # 1 (and that's not a good thing)?

Which is odd because they have the same gas tax and LA had lower gas prices in the list.

10. Florida
• State gas tax: 41.4 cents per gallon.
• Gas price as of mid-Jan. 2019: $2.12 per gallon. (21st lowest)
• State taxes as pct. of gas price: 19.5 percent (4th highest)
• Annual miles traveled per driver: 14,688 (25th lowest)
Damn Florida top ten and highest in the south. The roads are pretty well maintained though.

And no state income tax.
Ill take double the gas tax with no income tax.

Strange, perecentages are the exact same, LA has cheaper gas. No idea why Texas is lower. L comes before T. Maybe they had a typo on percentages.

Do you have to be an Instagram model to pump gas these days?

With the same tax per gallon and the cheaper price per gallon, Louisiana has a higher percentage gas tax per gallon. So by that statistic TX is bettering that category having a lower percentage gas tax per gallon.
But TX drives more and their gas is more expensive so the rating makes no sense in reality.

And you get the luxury of property taxes out the a$$. State taxes are about 1/3 of what a Texan pays for property tax....

We do more with our 20 cents than Louisiana does with theirs. Corpus Christi is replacing its major bridge. Baton Rouge, well...

increase in property tax funds amazing schools.
LA property tax + state income tax = TX property tax
basically a wash. In some instances little higher on TX side but you get amazing schools saving on private school education, car insurance is 1/2, etc..

I knew FL would be high as there is a noticeable difference in gas prices and road quality going from AL to FL. Then again, NY is more than FL and NYC streets are on par with NOLA streets.

Part of it is the freeze/thaw action. The Northeast and Midwest have 2 seasons, winter and road repair season.

U.K. Levies 54.9p per litre plus VAT at 20%
Works out at 71.2 cents a litre
$3.23 a gallon so we basically get taxed as much as Californians (highest in the US) pay at the pump!
