Why don’t as many people squirrel hunt anymore?

Because most hunting clubs are geared towards deer hunting, and they have most of the land tied up for that purpose.

I would love to hunt more squirrel in October but with all the different deer seasons that is getting harder to do.

Once all of the deer hunting is done, I'm taking my old Marlin 60 and gonna see what I can do.

Now if you have a young kid wanting to take him/her chasing tree rats with them as the only gun, I have the place that hasn't been hunted in two years. There are a shite load of them on my place. Gave up hunting all together. Lower Pointe Coupee parish area.

I had offer this in the pass to all if it is to get a kid in the woods.

I hunt with my two feists Ray Paul and Duke Silver. It’s slowed down due to private areas being too concerned with deer. I won’t put my dogs on public due to the risk. We still do alright though.

It was my first year hunting some public land and I ended up using squirrel hunting as a way to learn the land instead of deer hunting. Enjoyed it more than deer. Limited out a few times and shot some hogs. I like using the buffalo squirrel wing recipe from the meateater cook book.

My cur dog will eat squirrel heads but is scared of the whole squirrel. Dissapointed as all hell

No problem with this.

We hunt by walking through the woods and shaking the vines that go to the nests and shooting them when they run up the tree. We use .22 rifles, sometimes .22 pistols. Typically go on 1-2 hunts a year now in January and February.

I used to hunt them more when I was younger but doves and ducks have taken their place on most of my calendar.

Good ducks (some mallards, pintail, woodies, wigeon, teal) with a lot of fat are better than squirrels, but a muddy gadwall, or a fishy diver and I'd take squirrels every time.

ETA: but the number of times I hear people say they hunt but dont eat ducks because they dont like the taste makes me shake my head. Only thing I can figure is people cook the shite out of it and then yeah, it doesnt taste great.

I don’t do it as much as I did before I started bow hunting, but in the only one at work that still does. Im thought of as a hillbilly for killing and eating squirrels. Kind of a tradition for my Dad Brother and myself to fry a pile of them the night before opening morning of deer season.

Old buddy at my former camp was retired. He would squirrel hunt and tell me where the hot deer sign was. I’d climb a tree and whack a deer during bow season.

Love squirrel hunting. That and dove hunting are easily my two favorites.

Im not a big fan of going around blowing up squirrel nests unless I see a squirrel running into it. Kinda ruins the hunt for the next guy, especially if it's public land.

I enjoy both still hunting and hunting with a dog, which is the perfect opportunity to introduce a youngster to the woods.

And, if you hunt refuges like I do, wear some orange. Better safe than sorry.

Every year we do a squirrel rodeo After deer season. Winner gets a trophy. It’s pretty fun.

I still do both rabbit and squirrel hunt.
October is a big squirrel month and we are about to start rabbit hunting.
I have young boys and there’s no better intro into hunting than either of those two
