Do people still plan on retiring at 65?

I was setting up an IRA today (should have done it years ago seeing as how I’m 30 but that’s for another thread) and came up on the target year section. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t want to think about retiring until 75-ish. Maybe a couple of years before. I won’t have a labor intensive job at all so I don’t see much reason to personally, but understand others want to kick back and relax.

I would rather wait a few years and let my retirement build up than stress about hanging it up at 65. I also realize this view could change the older I get.

Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

I think the same. Doubt very seriously I retire at 65. But I do try to save everything I can as if I'm going to.

Make a plan & invest in several other passive income streams starting now so that you don’t have to worry about money or depend on just an IRA by 65.

In a perfect world work I think work would be optional, so yeah being set up to retire at 65 would be great. Then if you feel good keep going full time, part time or whatever.

Seeing as average life expectancy for males is like 78.

Expecting to retire at 75 sounds terrible

You can't count on working at 70 or beyond. No way to know what your health/mental state will be then. Everyone needs to do what they want or what works best for them, but I want to quit while I am still fit enough to enjoy life without a job for a while.

I want to have some quality of life for retirement. I have a pension, so I plan to work until around 65 then retire to a part time job. Or maybe just manage some rental property or something that makes me money.

Please look at your parents and grandparents at age 75....Aging diminishes us all, some faster than others. Most 75 year olds are not capable of doing demanding full time work.

Unless you’re a US Senator, those bastards never retire, seemingly....even when they’re clearly on the downslope of ability.

True. My parents had always been in good shape and had excellent health, but after 70 there are frequent problems that would make work suck. Fortunately, they retired years before and enjoyed some great gardening, hunting, and traveling years while still in good shape.

I hope to be fortunate enough to do the same.

I'm with you buddy.

After that I'd "work" by doing odd things that interest me whenever and keep me engaged.

Work is very important from a social health standpoint, so I'd like to keep that part and jettison the rest.

My goal is to reach financial independence by 45-50. I think kids will eventually wreck those plans but I think it would be achievable otherwise.

My goal is to “retire” from my currently job somewhere between 50 and 55. After that I’ll probably still do something for another 10 years or so, but it’ll be some that’s low stress that I enjoy

I guess my thing is that family gives me the most joy. Sure I want to take a trip here and there, go see some things, but to me personally, that’s what vacation is for. I still just have my greatest moments around my kids and know it will only get better around grandkids. I feel like I can enjoy that by slightly stepping back in my late 60s.

Those extra years of working would just set my family up for success even more.

I plan on retiring at 45 I'll probably work part-time but won't need to. I achieved financial independence at 41 but decided to work a few more years just to have extra cushion and delay drawing on investments.

Retiring at 75 sounds like a wasted lifetime. I have a million things I'd rather do than keep going to work day after day for nearly 6 decades. My career has been very meaningful and I've had some great experiences along the way but there's much more to life.

Planned on 59 but now am on disability at 58. I'm done. No problem. More about retiring with no bills rather than having a million bucks. After being out for a while, I have plenty enough saved.

I believe one point to consider is whether you will have an employer who wants you around past 65. Many large companies are offering early retirement packages to folks in their mid 50s and above to cut costs (those individuals being the highest paid). These packages are generous, but will not allow most to walk away at that point.

With that being the case, if you would like to work to 75, plan your financials so you are in a position to retire at 65 in the event you won’t be able to find a job. I suppose this doesn’t apply to those who own their own business.

Working towards retiring at 55. I think most people would be able retire before 65 if they really wanted to with enough discipline and investing in low cost index funds.
