I watched a guest pastor years ago hold somewhat of an auction during offering time.

"Do I have anybody that God will lead to give $100?"

"What about $500 worth of God's love?"

"Who wants their cup to runneth over? Who does God want to sow a $1,000 seed?"

He would wait between each number and point out those getting up to bring the money.

The greedy arse churches in NLA have started expanding to different "campuses." The bigger churches are steadily buying other churches and property. It's like a state school trying to blow their budgets by accumulatin real property.

if anyone tries to guilt you into giving, they are working for themselves

I have no idea if they pass a basket around or what, but let's say each person, every week is worth $5 to him that's $13.5 Million.

I know some people that attend Lakewood. They are giving much more than $5 a week.

If these churches were required to file a 990 tax return as a nonprofit, some of these revenue numbers would blow y'all away.

So you asked the institution accused of committing and lying about the crime where your money going to support them was directed, and simply believed their answer at face value?

Being that I know the man personally, have known him since before he became a priest and he is not a priest at the church I go to on a weekly basis, yes.

He could have been lied to as well, or he might be corrupt. I have no idea, but I want to support my local church so I give some money. I might be aiding church settlements, but how else am I supposed to keep the lights on in the place I go to bring my family for an hour of reflection per week?

I don't know the answer to that one. But I guess if you feel like you're getting value equal to or above what you're giving then it's a fine deal for you.

I have two kids and quantifying the love I have for them is impossible. You can play games with your religion and pretend to show how good of a Christian you are by regurgitating what you’ve read in the bible; however, if you aren’t very careful, you will raise kids that have a severely reduced sense of self-worth.

When a parent tells a child that they are not theirs, but “god’s” instead; and there is no living, breathing representation of said “god”, the kids end up confused and feeling like they just another one of your “god’s” innumerable, worthless pawns instead of aligning themselves with direct, healthy love from their parents. I know this from personal, painful experience.

I won’t change your belief system, nor will you change yours, but I’m at least hoping you think long and hard before telling your son that someone he’ll never physically meet loves him more than you do. And if you do, don’t be surprised if when he’s an adult, he doesn’t love you or value his relationship with you as much as you’d like.

Why would a successful (ex) lawyer quit his practice and start a non denominational church?
He didn't like being a lawyer and thought he could live a more meaningful life as a pastor.

Why would said church change names every 5 years or so? (Tax reasons?)
I don't see how a name change would create any tax benefits. Based on the size of the congregation, it may be an attempt to rebrand the church to attract more congregants.

My wife’s family is trying real hard to get us to join their church.. that’s really all I know about the pastor/church... I was raised Catholic but as of right now, I’m pretty apathetic about religion so I was open to give this church a shot, but it just seems sort of sleazy to me

Go and check it out. Meet with the pastor individually and ask him your questions in confidence. You should be able to get a better feel for whether it is sleazy or not.

I have more questions than answers when it comes to this shite

There is nothing wrong with that. A good pastor is willing to take time to work through your questions with you.

Here's the thing: it's impossible to love as much as God does. But I love my children as much as possible, through what I do for them, how I correct them, how I serve them, and just the attention I give them. There's no doubt, or at least I hope there isn't, in their minds that their daddy loves them very much. So when I attempt to teach them about God, teach, not brainwash, and I short change His love and greatness, I'm not doing them any favors either.

Plus, my goal is to raise them to seek their self worth in God and spiritual things, not in stuff that's going to fail them at some point. I don't want my son to judge his life on how well he can play baseball or how good looking he thinks he is. I want him to know his value based on a God who will never abandon him, made him just the way He wanted him, and has a purpose for him. That's what I want my children to know. If they reject that, I will mourn it but it's out of my hands, but I will still love them.

John Gray makes a ton of money from speaking engagements and books. I wonder when people will realize that the very well off pastors of the world very rarely make a lot from the church they pastor. Osteen doesn't even take a salary from Lakewood, but his book sales are super high.

Do you know how many of his dumbass books he sells? Hes a scum bag for sure, but hes likely getting most if not all of his big dough from his book sales.

He makes all his money from book sales and speaking fees. He takes no salary from his church.

I am not a fan of the man but I also do not believe in criticizing a guy for something he is not doing.

The fact that so many people buy into what Megachurches are selling and continue to tithe to them is a serious indictment on our society.

There are a lot of stupid, easily manipulated people in this country. Pretty damn sad tbh.

But ain't it funny how the most religious places are those populated by poor people with no hope? All I'm saying is I grew up in (and still live in) the thick of the bible belt, in some poor areas, and the people I knew didn't strike me as having gotten a lot of help from anyone.
