Not going to try and dispute you because I have no real evidence to the contrary to convince you other than a priest telling me that if I want money to go to my church, to put it in the basket. If I want it to go to THE CHURCH, donate to the services appeal or mail in the check as my monthly gift without earmarks for what it is used for.

I asked him the exact question of "How do I know my money isn't paying for the Church to cover up pedophiles?" And that was what I was told. Earmark checks or give in the basket.

I can tell you what our parish does in the Arch of NOLA.

Our parish is "assessed" X dollars a year to fund the Archdiocese. We have special collections throughout the year to raise money to pay this assessment.

However, if we don't raise enough money via the special collections, absolutely the difference comes out of the parish general fund (i.e. what we collect in the weekly plate).

Well, of course he's going to say that. It's complicated, but *all* donations--cash or otherwise--are pooled for common expenses. Most of the settlements are funded by self-insurance and excess coverage policies. These policies are 100% funded by donation. Yes, that coverage covers lots of other stuff, too. But, you are helping to fund diocese settlements.

No different than how our tax dollars fund settlements of politicians accused of harassment.

You have to consider context and the rest of the bible. Jesus was laying out what it would take for following him: give up everything, family, jobs, comfort, take up your cross. BUT, in other places in the bible, it's spelled out how to love and serve your family. So if you're going to believe the bible at all, you have to believe all of it, and that means it doesn't contradict itself.

I had this realization years ago when my son was first born and I didn't think I could love anybody as much as him. Then I thouhgt of how much God loves him, how much he knows about him......evertyhing, including every little baby dream he's having, knowing that my son is His and I just am blessed with the privilege to raise him and watch him grow up. In comparison, my love seems like hate when put up against the inmeasurable love of God.

It's a lot, and I acknowledge easy for skeptics to pick apart, but it's what I believe is truth.

Well, it's different in that I don't have a choice in paying taxes.

I'm a parent. I cannot bring myself to believe that you truly believe that. I know you do. And that's a hard pill for me to swallow.

no, I'm in DFW metroplex, neighbor next door sold his house for in the mid 400s, immediately a young, hot chick moved in, with four "adopted" daughters from Kenya, said the church was "helping" her out, she had moved from the same development about 4-5 blocks away, no job, said she is "involved" with the(mega)church, three of the girls in pricey private schools, one in public school, not long after they moved in, the house was completely renovated, and I mean everything, floors, cabinets, bathrooms, paint, electrical fixtures, appliances, added a pergola by the pool, everything, it was a brand new house, talked to all of the contractors, all of them every time I talked to them made a point of saying that they were doing everything pro bono and were volunteering, "mom" and kids were put up somewhere by the church as this took a couple of months, mom drives a brand new Caddy Escalade, also mom has three other fairly hot chicks from the church staying there to help her with the girls, nobody has a job btw, won't be surprised to see it on the market soon, good thing is the hot chicks come over for wine occaisonally

There is a reason that my thithe doesn't go to CotH, where I attend. I feel my thithe is handled more responsibly by another organization, GospelLink.

And thithing isn't limited to cash either.

Here is a pastor talking some sense about megachurches.

LINK

quote:

"Pastors are very powerful people that have lots of connections, when that much power gets concentrated, bad things happen that have huge impacts."

quote:

"The nature of [the Christian] concept of the flesh is that we are bent toward being self-preserving and self-exalting. Somehow that bent gets fed and flourishes as we become more visible to an approving public," he said. "Leading a very large church can be extremely difficult to do well, and almost dangerous from that standpoint."

Matt Chandler, pastor out of Dallas, put it best. You have to acknowledge that what we believe is crazy and hard to believe. If you present the gospel in a way that is easy to understand, you're not preaching the gospel, it's something else entirely.

What I have to realize that all that I have is a gift from God. Every last thing, including my family. The phrase "sixpence none the richer" comes from C.S. Lewis, where he talks about a father giving his child sixpence and that child going to buy the father a gift. But it was the father's to begin with.

Trust me, I love my children very much. And I have my doubts that if I were to ever be placed in a decsion where I needed to give them up in obedience of God that I'd be able to, but that's the goal. To love God that much.
