Best All Around Rifle

I’m sure this has been discussed but I wasn’t able to find anything when searching.
I’ve never been a big hunter outside of waterfowl. So my knowledge of rifles is limited at best. I have a few rifles but they are on the low/cheap end (mossberg and two savages). I’m looking for an all around good rifle that I can buy that is capable and is also of good quality. Be used mainly for deer at various yardages. Longest shot at the club is probably 220 yards (doubt I could make that shot but maybe in the future) some friends have been talking of a possible elk hunt in the near future so a rifle capable of that would be nice too. I’ve heard everything from a Ruger M77 to the Browning X-Bolt. I figured this board would be the best place to turn for info. Caliber and brand info is appreciated.

Well if you want to throw elk into the mix and have a really capable elk gun I gotta suggest 300 winmag.
Deer my favorite is 308.
Both 300 winmag but it’s overkill for deer.
Sake or weatherby would be my higher end go tos

Ruger American in 308 with a Nikon or leupold optic. Around $450-$600 total and will do everything you need for whitetail.

Weatherby Euromark .257 Wby magnum.

7 mag should do everything you want. Tikka of course is the OB standard. I was just at sportsman’s wherehouse in Slidell and they have the tikka t3x in stainless with black stock, fluted barrel (superlite model) for 699$ I don’t need another gun but if they had the caliber I wanted I would’ve bought it lol

I’d say a 30-06 for all around performance and availability of ammo

Not too many off the shelf factory guns get me excited anymore but I would like to buy one of those Browning Hell’s Canyon in a .270wsm.

For an all around rifle I think the caliber has to be the 30-06.
We can all argue about brand and no one will come up with a winner.

M1 Garland, 30-06, iron sights, perfect in the woods at up to 150yds unless you have really good eyes.

I have a .308 that I’ve killed multiple deer with and an elk. My dad has a 7 mag that he’s used on deer and elk that works great. I’d say can’t go wrong with either of those

Has a budget been given for said rifle?

I worked with a fellow that grew up on a reservation in Colorado. His father bought he and his 2 brothers 270's and that's all he uses today for everything from speed goats to elk. Keep in mind if you are going elk hunting with a guide, some have a mandatory caliber size. Buy a Tikka 270 or 30-06 with quality optics and shoot as much as you can.

Not mine in the picture but I have this exact rifle in .270 win (no bipod)
Rem 700 BDL Mossy Oak Bottomland Camo synthetic stock with factory camo'd barrel but with the best Nikon 50mm obj. money could buy back in '95...it was, has been and still is a deer killing MF'r and never shot anything but Federal Premium 165gr. Nosler Partitions out of it.

A $500 AR-15 and $250 of .22lr conversion unit. Then you can sell all the other rifles, cause the AR can do more than all of them put together, It's been winning the 600 yd rifle matches for 20 years now. it wins all the combat rifle matches. With a 10.5"long pencil barrel and 7.5" of silencer, its the perfect shtf rifle. The .22 unit is great for plinking, small game, teaching novices, indoor ranges, saving you 20c per shot, too. ou can get a see thru scope, the mounts are QD and return to zero. you can get luminous iron
sights, night scopes, red dot optical sights, drop in
trigger job, ambidestrous safety. Free float tube with a GI bipod mounting spot on it. 6 lb rifle, 3/4 lb .22 unit. 1 lb of scope and mount. The free-float tube is enough lighter than the handguard that the bipod adds no more total weight. The silencer adds 3/4 lb and tremendous levels of utility.
Get 1-in-9" rifling, from Model One sales. That's great for use with the 60 gr Federal fusion or the Black Hills Nosler partition softpoints. Both are intended for use on deer. The Aquila 60 gr subsonic .22 ammo, put up in .22 Short cases, works fine thru the 30 rd box mag and is BB gun quiet thru the 223 silencer, if you know to hold shut the bolt with your non firing hand.
The caliber swap takes just 10 seconds if you're in a
I can brain moose, elk, bear with this at 2x the range that anyone can chest hit them with a bow and arrow. That softpoint to the brain case will drop anything short of Elephant. It will take elephant with lung hits. Sneak up to 20m, get 3 hits on that 2 ft diameter lung in half a second, before it can turn, and then run like hell. Elephants can't outrun men, on open ground.
