I went to Lakeside in Metairie the other day. It was pretty crowded and didn't seem to have a bunch offices of trashy people. Why has Lakeside been able to buck the trend?

They bus the kulcha in at the Louisiana Mall. Don't go on weekends or nights. The best time to go is during the day during the week.

Or maybe that it's easier and cheaper just to order online. If I can get something at a local store for less than I can get it online, then I'm happy to go to the store. However, if I can get the same product for significantly less by ordering online I feel no need to subsidize nostalgia by paying a higher price.

Interact with patrons in the line at the Starbucks? Nah...mobile order and just walk in and out.

I'm happy to interact with others. But if customer service is shitty and/or the "others" are not respectful of everyone else's time, then why do it?

Case in point. I went to Target yesterday to buy a few things. As I'm checking out, the lady in front of me at the register, who had 4 items, begins a long discussion with the cashier about some program on her phone that is supposed to give her a 10% discount. As it turns out, the lady did not download the program and accompanying app before she reached the checkout line. People respectful of others would just pay full price, then go home and download everything for the next time she's at the store. However, this lady decides NOW is the time to download the program, including entering all of the information necessary to get the discount. After 15 minutes of waiting for her to figure everything out and download the program she finally checks out with her 10% discount applied to her total of.....$9 fricking dollars!!! She was disrespectful of everyone else's time just so she could save $0.90.

Sad to see malls disappear imo

Pretty iconic aspect of Americana

Ehh, they’re really one of the shittier aspects of 20th century “Americana.”

I’d say, for the most part, good riddance.

There will always be malls, class A malls are actually doing great, class B and C aren't. We just have to much retail property in this country for the current market.

I don’t get the downturn in some cases. I get that some malls are/were located in areas that turned into undesirable, unmarketable locations over the years, like Cortana, but many others aren’t and were supplanted by those stupid “open air” malls which is really just a bunch of stores next to each other. Hammond Square is a perfect example, Slidell is a good one as well, tho still on life support.

It’s freaking South La where it’s either raining or hot/humid AF or cold more days than not, yet people favor walking from store to store rather than one controlled environment with a food court, games and all? This is not forward progress.

I’m absolutely shocked at what great shape it looks to be in.

It’s perfectly suitable for a full restoration. My dream would be a 90’s theme - stuff like Suncoast/Sam Goody, KB Toys, a legit food court...

I doubt it. Cortana is just a larger version of the Metrocenter Mall in Jackson Ms. They did everything they could to keep the mall open including turning part of it into a massive police station, but the mall still closed for good earlier this year.

My ex-girlfriend ( her btw) worked for a company that involved in commercial real estate and her expertise was in malls. She said that most of the older malls are screwed. The future of malls is the ultra-nice malls that are more about displaying products that people go home to buy online and having great entertainment options like good restaurants and high quality movie theaters etc. So mall like Cortana and maybe even malls like MOL are screwed.

I’m surprised how clean that place is, even the closed stores.

The lay out of that was was so awesome.

I used to love that mall...many good memories.

Eating at Picadilly after a shopping trip, laughing at the inappropriate stuff at Spencer’s, getting my ears pierced, enjoying being old enough for my parents to leave me at the bookstore while they shopped.

Wasn’t there a fountain people tossed coins into?

Yeah seems like an enterprising person could make something of it. Could be a good place for online stores to have distribution centers/walk in stores.

I love interacting. I love going to bars and talking to a bartender or speaking to a waiter....but having to park, navigate mobs of people, hope they have the item you are looking for, wait in line at the register etc is an unnecessary hastle these days.

The Mall of Louisiana

is on a downward spiral.. They need food vendors to come in and open restaurants now because retail malls are a thing of the past.

It's pretty crazy to see the contrast of these dying American malls to the crazy-gigantic, thriving European ones. I went to several over the summer and it was shocking how many people were in them. A common theme was that they were all very new, had big movie theaters, lots of food choices, and were very clean. I guess in a society with dense cities built to handle foot traffic it makes more sense that people just walk down to the mall and grab what they need instead of ordering online.
