The answer is yes, you were a jerk. If you wan to stay, use your words (oh wait, nevermind!) and explain to your FIL that this is your first game in years and that you want to stay and sing the alma mater after the W. Choosing not to communicate in order to avoid a confrontation is a bitch move.

Turning the phone off is a dick move but if 3 out of the 4 people wanted to stay then majority rules. Be a man and tell him ya'll are staying instead of hiding. Father-in-law shouldn't have accepted the ticket if he didn't want to stay the whole game.

My wife would completely understand me wanting to stay the whole game, but if I had to turn off my phone and purposely lose her dad to do so, that understanding is gone. You fricked up. Should have just told him you were staying and handed him the keys so he could leave if he wanted.
