After Hurricane Katrina, actor Brad Pitt jumped into action to help house families in one of the hardest hit areas: the Lower Ninth Ward.
Through his “Make It Right” foundation, the star helped build distinctive homes for displaced survivors. But 13 years after the storm made landfall, some residents say the homes have a lot of issues.
Attorney Ron Austin said he plans to bring a lawsuit on the behalf of his clients against Pitt’s foundation in the coming weeks. Austin said some home have issues with porches, steps and roofs. He claims there are also electrical and plumbing issues and some residents have reported sicknesses and severe headaches.
“Essentially, Make It Right was making a lot of promises to come back and fix the homes that they initially sold these people and have failed to do so,” Austin said. “We have some people who have gotten sick, or we believe to be sick.”
Neal Dupar, who is not part of Austin's lawsuit, told WWL-TV that he used nearly $200,000 in insurance money after Hurricane Katrina to buy a Make It Right home. Dupar said he was extremely grateful for the discounted rate, but now his house is falling apart and he is not sure what is going to happen next.
“I don’t know what the future is going to bring with this house or everybody else’s house, but it’s going downhill now,” Dupar said.
WWL-TV reached out to Make It Right, but they never returned our calls.

So 11 year old homes shouldn't need maintenance or upkeep?

So a normal cheaply built 13 year old home?

I’ve been sick and had headaches too. Is this the fault of the house?

Mold?
I would hope that these homeowners keep an eye on these homes and fix any issues that pop up.

Cue Eddie Murphy's letter to my landlord............some poems are timeless.
Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason --
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...
Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason --
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...

And this is why we can’t have nice things. Next time someone thinks about helping the less fortunate, their attorneys will remind them of this.

When you get free shite you shouldn’t complain. Be thankful you were helped by Make it Right because they did nothing for St Bernard Parish residents.

Mold?
Working with a building material supplier I was involved in bidding on the framing materials used for these homes. All the framing lumber we were bidding included having them sent to a specialty chemical coating supplier that is lifetime warrantied against mold & mildew and like 50 yr insect resistance. I did not win the bid, it went to a larger supplier out of Alabama but I heard they only used it on about half and then stopped to reduce cost.

Fits right in with the rest of New Orleans unfortunately.
If you say the word "maintenance" to most of New Orleans residents, they look at you like you are speaking in tongues.

Yep. Absolutely nothing shocking about this story.

In Nola no good deed goes unpunished.

These homes have issues related to basic design flaws and poor construction that are beyond regular maintenance and upkeep. A new roof shouldn't fail in 5 years. A new wooden deck shouldn't sag or become covered with mildew stains in 2 years.

Hollywood and the media don't care about blue collar white people.
CNN made it look like only black people suffered in that storm.
