re: Chronological Account of the Worst Fishing Trip of My Life

After a lifetime of hunting and fishing, I still am amazed at what a true sportsman will endure to be able to have a chance to catch a fish or shoot a duck. This story defines the difference between a true fisherman and a guy that just wants to "go fishing". I've had friends tell me over and over how they would give anything to go fishing with me, only to have them sitting despondent in the boat after 1 hour of not getting a bite. What they should have said was, I want to go catch a fish with every cast and not be hot, or cold, or sleepy from getting up at 4 am.
Thanks for sharing! Brought back lot's of memories and made my morning.

Glad I can make some people laugh. Miserable as it was, at least it's funny now.
I really thought I was going to be bass fishing with my dad, but that fell through. I'd been wanting to take the kayak out at night for a while, so when my other plans didn't work out, I kind of decided to go at the last minute. This was my first time going in the kayak at night, and really the first time I'd had the kayak out in a while, so my system of getting ready obviously wasn't very fine-tuned.
Really, if I'd just remembered two items - a lighter, and the insect repellent - this could have just been a normal fishing trip with not many fish. But, it snowballed and got ugly.

Yeah I was playing with my telescope last night and I noticed the damn mosquitoes are worse this year...I guess my little bat friends aren't around as much...I miss those little mosquito killing machines. This is the first year I've lived here and it's been bad like this (I've been here since 2002)

Dang man, that's rough. Even though I'm in Florence area I'd have come jumped you off after an episode like that

I can definitely sympathize with trying to sleep in a truck during summertime. Been a long time since I was a teen though. Its already hot as balls so you want to open window to let air in but mosquitos come with. Bet you are having a fun day at work trying to recover

Is it just me that wonders how the wife was not flipping out

She had no idea if I'd be home before daylight anyway. I did text her to let her know I was sleeping in my truck. Of course, she never saw my text until she woke up Sunday morning. If I'm ever in a real emergency in the middle of the night, she's near the bottom of my list of people who might save me before I die.

I too took my kayak on a night fishing adventure.
I too forgot bug spray. I finally had enough, I paddled all the way to the store on the lake. Tried to get off the kayak and onto the dock to no avail.
Called it quits, next few days were miserable. I'd have to wake up in the middle of the night and go run super hot water over my arms and legs to help sooth the itch.
The next time I went out there I put on so much deet my lip was numb

Bad trips are worth their weight in gold. They give comedic relief until you die.
I’ve got one from 30 years ago
3 separate parties are all going shrimping to the Rigolets in the mid 80s
Uncle has a Chevy 4wd POS that chugs the gas. And a slow puller.
On the way down at night. The fiberglass motor cover (inboard motor) flies off somewhere on the highway.
Shows up late to launch as we are all waiting.
Hours later we see him talking with another boat while trawling, it was an old friend.
Somehow they crossed the nets and got tangled. The greetings went from pleasant to “you stupid MF” is all we can hear. Next thing the old friend is diving to untangle
Was a bad day of no catching. Uncle decides to make another skull drag to get an extra trawl in .. so we had to wait at the launch.
The ole Chevy is moaning to pull the boat out. About burns the clutch out. Smelled like an NHRA drag strip.
We make it to Slidell and uncle needs gas. Literally runs out one block before the station. Had to buy a can to put gas in.
Runs the battery down trying to restart it.
Gets it into the lot finally and notice a flat tire. Helped him change that out.
We jumped in our truck and said F him. He’s on his own now.
My grandpa laughed about that day up to the day he died. .
