I still think Holy Grail is slightly better, but Life of Brian is a freaking hilarious movie.

It just doesn't flow well, and the skits are not as stand alone as their other work. Certainly not bad, and many great moments, but just isn't in the same class as Grail.

Splitters!

We aren't the Judean Peoples Front! We're the People's front of Judea!

It's very good and still gets plenty of love. The Monty Python movie that is underappreciated is The Meaning of Life. It's got some of the best sketches that they ever did. But it also goes all out to offend everyone that they can think of in a way that Holy Grail and Life of Brian never did.

Oh its more than just a funny movie, it completely nails the ridiculousness nature of all organized religion and the terrorism that comes with it.

Life of Brian is hysterical.. my favorite Monty Python movie. It probably doesn’t get a lot of love because it mocks the life of Jesus Christ.

Anyway... crucifixion isn’t so bad. First offense

It's hilarious. The Roman guard correcting the painting vandalism. The sermon on the mount. Fantastic.

I like it better than Holy Grail I have many friends who agree. Just not as widely known as Holy Grail. I know many people who love Holy Grail and never heard of life of Brian

I love it. Better than Holy Grail.

romanes eunt domus - if you've ever taken Latin in school, that scene is hilarious.

Save for “Blessed are the cheesemakers” and the beginning with the Three Wise Men, I don’t really think it does and purposefully avoids it. When they were first writing the movie this was their intention, but as they were going through the gospels they found Jesus to be a good guy who preached civility and kindness.

Instead they decided to go after Christians in general for being complete hypocrites for not following Jesus’ message. It definitely goes after Christians themselves, but is fairly respectful towards Jesus himself.

It has some memorable bits, but Holy Grail is much better imo.

It gets plenty of love, it's just an old movie and Grail was far more popular.

I'm on the other side of this. LOB is the best of the Monty films, but Grail gets more overall recognition. I love both, but LOB is the clear winner for me

Brian gets overlooked in part due to the controversy around it and part because Holy Grail gets so much hype.

Frankly, Brian is arguably better than Holy Grail if only because the Pythons has a much better idea of how to tell a story this time around.

Bits like Biggus Dickus, “Welease Woger”, the stoning, the People’s Front Of Judea, “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”, etc, are all classics but don’t get the notice that the Black Knight and the Knights Who Say Ni do.

It absolutely does not. Although the Pythons were largely agnostic/atheistic - they literally went way out of their way to be extraordinarily respectful to the person of Jesus Christ.

What they were skewering were the mobs of dogmatic followers of any religious or even political figures and the groupthink and violent splintering such groups inevitably devolve into.

About the closest the film comes to ANY misquoting or disrespect are the responses to portions of the Sermon on the Mount (mostly comedy about folks mishearing him) and the cured leper upset that he no longer has the infirmity that makes begging lucrative:

(PFJ member complaining about Jesus' passivity)- "What Jesus blatantly fails to appreciate is that it's the 'meek' who are the problem."

(After ex-leper complains about Jesus' do gooding)-

Brian: There's no pleasing some people. Ex-leper: That's what Jesus said.

The rest of it is 100% about the followers, schism, dogma, etc.

Exactly.

quote:

BRIAN: Look. You've got it all wrong. You don't need to follow me. You don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves. You're all individuals!

FOLLOWERS: Yes, we're all individuals!

Ossie Brown was a dumbass for banning the movie in Baton Rouge for making fun of Jesus Christ. It didn't.
