I had forgotten about that but now that you mention it I do recall. Yes, there was talk of him doing just that.
Again, McCain has some deep-rooted psycho-urge to back-stab his own side. He hates the Bushes and worked to undermine them, he disparaged POW/MIA families seeking more info, he threatened to help the Dems keep Senate power away from the GOP, he works harder to hurt Trump than he ever did for his constituency in Az.
If you were in the foxhole in the Ardennes Forest in 1944 and John McCain were your "battle buddy", you'd better watch your back, as well as your front. John McCain is a psychologically disturbed man.

Let’s be real, there is nothing independent about John McCain. He’s always desperately wanted to be a democrat, but knew he could never get elected as one in Az. That’s why he toyed with the idea of being an independent with the leader of the Dems at the time.
