Makita for all the tools I use regularly, Ryobi or Harbor Freight for occasional use where it’s tough to justify paying for the Makita version.
Btw, if you go Makita, get the sub compact 18v drill and driver set (all black). Can’t recomnend them enough.

yeah, I'll post on the OT lounge if I want humor and sarcasm. I post here if I want honesty and practical answers for stuff like this.

I had Porter Cable set and a Craftsman set over the years. Both were pretty shitty. The drills were ok, but the saws sucked on both sets.
I recently bought the Ryobi One series and have been pretty pleased. For a do-it-yourself guy that is not doing pro jobs day in and day out, I have been very pleased. I like the versatility of the batteries coming in different sizes (more uses between charges) and you have a ton of tools to add to it. My favorite add on tool has been 1/2" impact wrench that I use for rotating my tires. I don't have to drag out the air hose for my pneumatic impact wrench. Over all I have been very pleased with this package deal.
Have a buddy that has a blind/window treatment business and over the last 20 years has used every manufacturer out there. He says for the money and durability that Makita has been the best. He is only using drills.

I have Milwaukee shite since I began my collection with their tools and I like having one battery for all.
Doing it over now I would have e zero issue with running Makita. Very good as well and cheaper to start-up.

DeWalt all the way. They continue to make the best lithium tools. You can buy tools that are interchangeable with battery and AC power, which is awesome. And you can buy their lawn tools and use interchangeable batteries.

I've been having great luck with Milwaukee tools. The fuel series, while a little more pricey, have been great. I have these for my drill, driver, and reciprocating saw. The fuel saw with the 9.0 battery is a beast. For circular saw and grinder I'd rather stick to corded, but the battery versions are great as well.
Before I decided to take the plunge years ago, I knew I'd want to stick with a particular brand going forward to always have batteries and reduce the clutter of chargers on my workbench. I decided on Milwaukee because they offer some great performing tools and they seem to be pretty innovative with their offerings. IMO pretty much everything they release is pretty great when compared to some other brands that may make a great saw for example, but a very mediocre something else.
Since then, I've added a few of their 12v tools what have been great as well. Also nice that I can use the same chargers with either 18v or 12v. Just my 2 cents.

I bought the Porter/Wagoners years ago, on sale at Slows for cheap. Did fine until the batteries died at about 5 years. Got lucky and found some new ones on sale for cheap. Saws a bit sucky but everything else works fine for what I do with em.

I guess I'm the only Bosch fan here. I have 5 different drills/impact drivers, Jig saw, and a pony router.
They get used a lot and I've never had any issues with any of them.
Two of them are 12v lithium and I've had them for around 10 years. Couldn't begin to tell you what all they have been used to build.

I have DeWalt 20V system, no issues with any of the tools or batteries except finding room as I keep buying more tools and batteries.
If you are starting from scratch, take a hard look at Hitachi 18V tools. They are very well made tools and don't cut corners on durability. Usually can be found a little cheaper than DeWalt, Makita, and Milwaukee too.

Not the stuff they have that looks like it came from Family Dollar. It looks like Makita and Milwaukee knockoffs. These are 20V lithium.
I bought the Bauer 1/2" impact after my Craftsman kept eating batteries and ended up throwing the Craftsman away. Example, I was changing out some 3/8 and 1/2 in galvanized bolts on my boat trailer yesterday and kept breaking the damn things off. My Craftsman dang sure wouldn't do that.
I wouldn't try to make a living with it by any means but just using it every few days or so I'm impressed.
It's all made in China now so why pay more if you don't have to?

I have heard good things but I think they are just drills correct? I don't believe they have sawzalls, circular saws... So if all you want is a drill to hang pictures or whatever around the house I'm sure its fine. But if you have more power tools then you now have to have different batteries. I just like all my tools to have the same batteries. Makes it easier.

ETA - ridgids battery warranty is ridiculously good. Just take it to Home depot and get another one...lifetime. My FIL has a set that is on battery #5 i think, all exchanged. The only probably is, it weights an arse ton.

I have 18v Ridgid and my son has 20v Dewalt. While working side by side, his Dewalt outperforms my Ridgid by a mile. Those 2 extra volts shouldn't make that much difference.

Makita, Milwaukee, or Dewalt. You can get everything you want from those brands for $600 or so. Maybe a hair more depending on what models you go with.
