Before you say this should be on the OT lounge...I'd rather hear from the craftsmen who frequent this board and I've seen their workmanship.

I'm looking for a new set of cordless tools. Drill, driver, reciprocating saw, circular saw (will only see light duty since I have a good circular saw already), and possibly an angle grinder (just recently saw some kits had grinders and I could use one of those in light situations as well).

I'm really just curious to know what the craftsmen of the OB use and what they like.

TIA.

I had DeWalt before someone stole them and they were good tools. After they were stolen I decided to try Makita and I love them. I personally like that they stick to an 18v platform. Even the 36v is just two 18v batteries so it makes it nice not to have to constantly be buying different types of batteries. Since I have owned both I would recommend Makita but both are very nice.

Makita

Yeah, that's partially the reason why I'm asking. I currently have an outdated/light duty set of B&D cordless tools and I'm tired of the batteries not lasting that long ("smart charger" won't charge them, so they can't be used any longer). I left my backup battery along with my reciprocating saw in La on my last trip there a few weeks ago...and I needed to drill some holes to install some eyebolts for string lights in the backyard....so I borrowed my neighbor's Makita drill....I liked what I was using.

I've seen DeWalt used alot by the contractors building houses so I wanted to ask some of the OB DIYers what they had/liked/used.

Thanks for sharing.

As far as Ryobi (other poster)....do you use Ryobi?

I run the DeWalt 20V system. No issues, and powers through anything I've thrown at it yet. I also have the FlexVolt (60V) circular saw, also no issues and has cut through everything I've thrown at it.

Ryobi tools suck IMO, but it all depends on how much you use them.

Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee are the top big name brands

Rigid is a home depot exclusive and has a great warranty. I'd go rigid over ryobi

Pick the flavor that has the tools you like. Batteries are key as well, higher amp hours help with more power draining tools

I have Makita and I love them. I was never impressed with Dewalt drills and their sawzall is terrible. The system they use to lock in blades will fail with extended use. I went through two and both went out. IMHO Makita and Milwaukee are the best. I prefer Milwaukee a little more but I made a good deal on my first Makita set so I've stuck with them.

I have the Makita 18v drill and impact driver. I have been very pleased with them. My Dad and Brother-in-law both purchased the same set after using mine.

Milwaukee

I'm glad you brought up this name. I'll go look at their cordless line too. My father used a Milwaukee port-a-ban and corded drill from them for years...they still work (I'm 45) and those were made with cast aluminum cases....I figure Milwaukee has gone the way of plastics but that doesn't matter, if their quality is as good as it used to be...then I'll seriously be looking at that.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I appreciate the candid responses on this topic. Knowing what others use and have had luck with helps. Of course anyone can get a lemon at any given time...but if I hear one name more than others...there's likely a good reason.

Go with any of the big names and you will be fine. I have dewalt 20v and love it.

Also Milwaukee has been bought out they are all made in China as is Dewalt. From my knowledge I think Makita is still made in Japan, and if that's the case the quality should not even compare.

I've used Ryobi for years. The tools work fine.

They're made by TechTronic which also makes Craftsman and Rigid.

Good value for the money.

Literally no one has ever said that.

Dewalt and Makita are the popular choices for high quality. Ridgid seems to be a popular choice for value per $ spent.

Makita or Milwaukee. I use both a few times a week, and they hold up to my abuse

My main stuff is Milwaukee 12v and Makita 18v.

Eta: I worked in a high production finish carpentry shop with like 15 different workstations and 40 people using various cordless tools all day long. Makita is what we used, because the DeWalt and Rigid stuff crapped out quickly

That home Depot sale is pretty nice. Just needs another battery or two.

ETA: I bought like 30 Ryobi drills a couple years ago for very light work in retail showrooms. They worked fine and we had no issues with them at all. I still have mine and use it use pretty regularly.

DeWalt and Milwaukee are obviously better quality, but if its not for a jobsite and only occasional use then some others will be fine.

I'll add a caveat to this...it depends on the version of DeWalt you're buying. The XR brushless line is rock solid, but their lower end stuff tends to have much worse reviews and don't last as long. Of course the brushless XR line also costs more, so you get what you pay for and all that jazz.
