We have a rule that no one cracks open a beer until there's a fish in the boat. Some like to bend that rule and count the bait fish we catch, but most will wait the 90 minutes from when we launch until we catch a fish. A cold white can at 7:30 AM tastes so much better after someone has landed a big Jack. And the one that catches it has to toast.

I don’t care how much my friends drink as long as they aren’t a danger to me or other passengers.
I drink depending on my crew that day. Close friends I’ll have more than 1-2 on a 6 hour trip. Certainly never get drunk for obvious safety reasons, but love some white cans on the water especially when the fish aren’t cooperating.

i wouldn't be able to find my spots without being shite faced
and there is a glass reef in bayou ponton thanks to my old man so why don't you pour a little out for my old man if you are fishing in that deep hole where it meets oak river

He listerally pounds 8 beers before we even get to the launch. He's wasted by 12 pm. Anyone have a buddy like that they avoid on the boat??
My brother used to do this.
Hammertime is right, don't skirt mental health issues.
I sat down and had a serious conversation with my brother. Found out it was his only time to blow off steam and the drinking and hanging out with me was more important to him than the actual fishing.
I asked him to reign it in a bit, he did, and there have been no issues in years.
Talk to your buddy.

I respect the water too much to get waisted. I’ve been in some bad situations sober that I’m not sure I would have handled well drunk. If I’m going out in my boat I want to make sure my guest is on fish and having a good time. If I’m going fishing with a buddy in his boat I want to be the best guest at all times so I’ll be invited back.

I'm just going to pretend there's not really a thread promoting sobriety while fishing.

F all this, I hate drinking on the water. The waves/alcohol exacerbate the sea sickness. Now, I love drinking near the water.

Have a buddy who refers to himself as a "light drinker."
He keep asking me to take him bass fishing, so I finally did. Found out that "light drinker" meant that he starts drinking about 30 minutes before sunrise -- as soon as it gets light.

I like beer as much as anyone, but there's a time and place for pounding beer, like at the camp after your done fishin...last time I checked open container is illegal, so if he's drinkin on the way to the launch in your truck then he's also puttin you at risk if you get stopped. Talk about ruin a fishin trip in a hurry before it even gets started.

I admit, the less fish we catch, the more beer we drink.
I'd rather catch fish, but good chance I'm gonna do one or the other.
But to your point, if he really becomes non-functional on the boat more than once, that's a deal breaker.
Sometimes it's not the easiest thing to do to find the right fit for a fishing partner, just keep looking. Probably a few folks on here that'd take your invite and better pay for the damn fuel, AND the beer, and bring sammiches WITHOUT being asked.

My daughter was asking for a new rod and reel this weekend while we were at Field and Stream getting a couple of things. They should really capitalize on the market and sell a Zebco 33 with a 12 pack of iced down white cans. Whether you're on the banks of some relative's pond or out in the gulf, nothing like a rod in one hand and a cold one in the other.

These days, I'm much closer to 8 beers in a day than I am 8 before hitting the launch.
That said, there is something special about those first few beers on the way out to the rigs while the sun comes up.
After that, I usually stop until the afternoon.

i have a buddy exactly like that. But you only really fish for a few hours anyway so most of the time its not that bad. I'll go and have a few myself when we go in the mudboat. When he starts to get sloppy i just shut it down. I make him take less beer when we go in the bass boat. It wouldn't be as bad but he wants to use all your fishing gear which I don't mind but he always breaks or birdnest to the point of no return.
Just dont' go with him on his off days though. Sometimes he will be drinking all night and show up at the launch gone. Can't count how many times he fell out the boat.

Damn, this thread is making me want to crack a cold one on the ole boat! Guess I'll just go sit in it in the garage tonight with an ice chest and pretend I have the time to fish right now
Might be able to make it on the water Sunday, after the 14 hour work day I will inevitably be putting in on Saturday.

As long as I have somewhat sober help from a few guys on the boat I'm ok with one or two guys being wasted. Usually the wasted guy has funny stories, good attitude and makes the trip fun. Only once has wasted guy done something really stupid on my boat - we were snapper fishing a few miles off OB with several other boats and the wasted guy decided to jump in and start swimming around. Pissed everyone off and one boat came up to us and said they had seen a huge shark there a few hours earlier. Could have been bad.

I never have. I really don't have enough land to need any.

Grassy gets it. If I am not catching fish, I am going to enjoy being on the water and have a beer or three. I have salvaged a few terrible days of trout fishing by cracking a beer, cranking the radio and throwing a dead shrimp on the bottom catching drum and sheepies.
