Hell, the food it's provided make up much of the expense for me.
I didn't mention this because the OP said he doesn't fish.
Now that you did, hell, not only am I experiencing joys people pay guides for I also have all the salmon, steelhead, assortment of rockfish and Dungeness crab I can eat.
My friends love that I fish because I don't eat much Salmon so I give away 90% and my boat produces so I have a lot to give away. Although last year I got smart and used filets to trade for other goods.

pretty sure that's illegal, no?

That's a loaded question. It is for me but I have a camp and use my boat year round multiple times per month.

it's not the money pit half of these guys think it is. For those of you who don't own boats, what's your hobby? I can almost guarantee you that it is more expensive than boating when you really add it all up.
People think nothing about dropping 10K on a vacation but freak out at the cost to own a boat.
I get far more satisfaction out of the boat.

I’ve had a boat for 17 years straight. You really don’t use it like you think you will. And not running them will start bringing up carb problems.
You need to make a list of the planned activities. And match that with a suitable boat.
I use my boat for summer fishing, fall fishing, joy riding, pulling a tube, watching poker runs, relaxation, exploration. Notice I have listed different events to only partly justify why I have the thing. Lol.
But it is nice to hit the water and get away from it.

How much money is it worth for you to get away from your wife for a few hours versus how much time do you want to spend with your wife all day long.

Interestingly, I had never heard "If it flies, floats, or F&ucks before". Had a nice chuckle. Then I read it a half dozen more times on this same thread and now I'm already sick of it.
PS...Boats are great if you are serious about it. Otherwise no way.

Well, BTR is for my money pretty far from "boatable" water, but down here in Metairie, I'd say it's well worth it, as the Bonnabel Boat Launch on Lake Pontchartrain is 5 mins. away for quick fun. Also, it's really easy to get to the West Bank with its bayous and other lakes, and a short drive to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to go visit islands. Heck, I've towed it as far as Pensacola and even Destin.
This is now my 12th year of owning a used (1996) boat. Only paid 4 grand for it, but have dropped probably a little more than that in actual purchases (replaced outboard, new trailer, re-upholstered seats, etc.) and repair bills over the years . Always try to do as much work myself on it that I can to keep costs down, and that has become a bit of a hobby to me. Regardless, it's well worth the fun and memories it has given me and my family.
Like you, really not a fisherman-- just mainly use it for fun and mainly camping on barrier islands. Nothing like sitting by the campfire on a beach with a drink and cigar, watching the last of the sunset in the west, then watching the moon and stars come up while the little waves lap the shore and your boat lies at anchor just a few yards out.

If you dont live on the water you will not use it nearly as much as you think you will. Maybe the first year, but after that it will just be a big pain in the arse.
This. Even on the water I see a lot of boats sit on the lifts all year long. It only takes us 10 minutes (most of that is getting the cooler ready) from deciding to go out to actually being on the water and I have noticed a steady drop in yearly hours. If I had to hook up a boat, drag it to a landing, launch it and reverse the process at the end of the day I MIGHT go out twice a year.

Buy someone else’s new mistake. Craigslist is great for boats people bought a year or two earlier and sell because they don’t use it.
I got a 3 year old boat with less than 90 hours on a Yamaha 4 stroke 115 with trailer for 10k. Buyer gave me all of the paperwork from when he bought it for 38k.

I wish I had that kind of access.
I fished almost 1 month straight last fall and 27 days straight the fall before.
Was only a 20 min drive 1 way though.

I always wanted to take my boat down there and check that place out. Looks like the type of place to get hammered, catch the clap, and probably get some good knuckle checking in.

I go through this regularly. But I find its cheaper and more productive to stay with my fishing guide buddies. Costs some coin, but I dont deal with the boat maintenance and I always catch fish.
