I guess I'm the exception, but I have a boat I bought used about 10 years ago for recreation. It has run like a dream, and I've had a blast with it.

I promise I've put more into the trailer trying to make the damned lights work reliably than I have repairing the motor or adding amenities to the boat.

I bought it around $4,000, and could probably sell it today for the same price. It's been a great investment, although my use of it is waning now that I've explored all the places I wanted to take it. Still glad I have it, though.

Yep. Sorry little man.

Can't help you for college but you know how to fish and swim and appreciate those days on the water. Lol

It's not exactly like that though. Got to live for tomorrow and today. Balance.

A small boat is well worth the money. A large boat can be a money pit.

I had a 16 ft. center console aluminum flat with a 40 hp Yamaha. I used the frick out of it. I loved tossing a gold spoon at redfish, and it allowed me to get into shallow ponds where I’d almost never see another boat.

Paid around $9,000 for boat, motor, trolling motor, and trailer brand new. Pretty much all of the electrical stuff went out on it in a few years but it ran great and I didn’t need the speedometer, tach, depth finder, etc. on that kind of boat anyway. When I had to give up fishing due to health issues around 6 years later, I put it on the side of the road with a sign for $4,500 and within a couple hours had several guys begging for it. Could have got more for it.

It was well worth it for me. Damn I miss that little boat.

I also found that when I buy a used boat the little 16 to 17ft aluminum boats with 40 hp to 75 hp with less stuff on them sell within hours. I have also used them more than my bigger boats. You do have to watch it when it is windy they can be fished from the spillway to the marsh very economically.

Absolutely

Some of the best memories in my life are boating as a child

And some of my best memories and experiences with all of my children occurred while boating

They are a wonderful thing for families.

For sure a money pit. Had always own boats from 14' to 32'. Bigger the boat, bigger the up keep bill. Was nothing to drop 2K+ on a weekend offshore fishing.

Some of the best times in my life was taking the family overnighting fishing trips offshore.

I'd you're single, get you a ski boat baw. Get some tattoos if you don't already have some and head to the prop stop.

You can find a nice used boat for a decent price if you shop around. I would start with something like that first.

Boats are great if you use them, but you won't use it as much as you think you will.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post this as if they were clever and original.

The answer...not very long

If ur not even set on freshwater or salt, then I suggest u don't buy one...

....only buy a boat if u have a passion To fish and actually "catch" fish....otherwise your boat will collect dust...jmo

In my mind I’m a south LA born cajun who owns bass boats and favorite hobby is rippin redfish and stalking bass.

Reality is I haven’t been routinely out on the water in 14 years. And it seems like an exhausting proposition to do without owning a lake house.

I’ll save that fun for retirement.

I really want to buy a pontoon boat in next 3-5 years.

Cruising the lake in the summer time
Is one of the things in life I enjoy most.
Tubing with kids, enjoy a cold beer and some music.
Summertime in the south.

I'm pretty surprised you don't have a boat.

If you can talk yourself out of it, then you won't use it much. It will be fun for the first summer. After that you will get tired of cleaning, maintaining and paying for it, just so you can drag it out once every 3 months or so.

The people who get their money's worth out of a boat never question whether or not they should own a boat. They're in it every weekend, and consider it a necessity, much like a car.

Depends on what you want. I've got a 95 model Shoal Runner that is virtually indestructible. GM 350 motor and a jet pump that will crush rocks. It's worth more than I paid for it and I've had a ton of fun with it.
