The weird thing is they gave the hard core republicans everything they wanted: no taxes AND a scapegoat. Turrible tactics

They've beaten that dead horse of an idea for over 50 years now. Thrown tax money after "building an educated workforce" for decade after decade. Zero return on the investment.

That's not entirely true. We have developed a decent sized educated workforce, they just all work in Texas now.

While it is a shitty joke, TOPS shouldn't be held up as the standard for governing. TOPS is a Bernie-ish luxury, and we are a poor and low-tax state

You said it! TOPS is a ridiculous freebie that's totally unnecessary. You can get free college tuition by joining the Louisiana National Guard.

Too many damn privileged snowflakes in La. whose Mommy and Daddy don't want their precious snowflake to eat at the mess hall with "the blacks."

Pisses me off.

I'm shocked that none of the Politards hasn't sky-screamed yet that this is all JBE's fault.

Maybe the reason JBE's approval numbers are still fairly high is that many people realize JBE is at least trying to do something, and the warring factions in the House are undermining all compromise attempts with their partisan games.

If JBE can't get his party and caucus under control to make genuine compromises with the GOP when they don't own the house, what hope does he have for being a succesful governor and why in the world does that warrant a decent approval rating?

And is he even interested in doing that considering that he's still asking for a lot of dumbass tax increases that's not too far off from what the hardcore fringe of his party wants?

To give an example, a big reason why Trump was in a complete tailspin with sagging numbers for a long time last year was that he was constantly fighting with his own party in the GOP and couldn't deliver a significant legislative victory until December with tax reform.

Louisiana is fricked because of JBE. The state would get 25% royalties on wells drilled in state waters. Now JBE has made it where no companies will drill because of his lawsuit.

How fricking dumb can 1 guy be?

Good. The typical people I know whose kids are on TOPS live in $300K houses and take a couple of expensive vacations a year.

You think that’s why drilling is down? Education must be awful these days.

Wait what? The horror.

Go around the state and find me an area with good schools where the average house price isn’t between $250-$300K.

And what does that have to do with scholarship? Students that excel in high school should be automatically saddled with the cost of college just because their parents are able to afford to live in a place with good schools? Except if theyre female or a minority of course.

The point, of course, is they can afford to pay their tuition, instead of accepting welfare the state can't afford.

Then do away with tops completely. If you think a 300k house means someone is rich I really feel for you.

You said they didn't need welfare from the state in the form of tuition if they have a 300k house and go on vacations. Clearly that is not a spot you find yourself in since you have no understanding of what those families should have. Yet you sure do think you know how they should spend it. Sorry you are poor. Explains your political stances, however.

Didn't know you were ignoring me before. How will I survive?

Invalid person?

I know that's why it's down, kid. I may fall short in a few areas, but this isn't one. I suggest you take your toys to a different sandbox before you get in over your head, albeit too late

I think we should go ahead and cut tops. It was nice to have but I can't use it twice and I'm not having any kids go to college any time soon

Naw man. $300 million ain't that much when the objective is to build an educated, trained workforce. To lift people to a higher station. it's not that much at all.

The graduates aren't staying in La. That's a huge problem. La. doesn't have enough jobs to keep them here.

Plus the standards are too low.

And we don't have the money.
