ESPN story

quote:

Support for the United States-led bid to host the 2026 World Cup is more divided than most predicted, with some estimates of voting totals having Morocco not just threatening the North American bid, but actually beating it, multiple high-ranking football executives within FIFA and the continental confederations told ESPN this week.

The United States won't be playing in the World Cup in Russia this summer, but bringing the 2026 tournament to North America had always been seen as significant solace. Yet now, with just over three months until the pre-tournament FIFA Congress where the body's 211 member nations will vote on those hosting rights, even that consolation prize for American soccer fans may be in doubt.

Nothing makes more sense than FIFA hosting three consecutive World Cups in places with widespread, blatant and ongoing human rights abuses.

They're like plenty of other international NGOs in their laughable hypocrisy.

The only way this would make sense, and probably not at all the case, would be if they were actually considering stripping Quatar of the 2022 Cup and moving it here. But it's probably just FIFA doing FIFA things.

if FIFA actually has the balls to insinuate that trumps comments influenced the decision to choose Morocco over a North American bid.....I say we pull out of FIFA and hold our own tournament. test them. this is a fricking joke. I want to put together a well articulated argument but I just can’t. i’m out of words. lol FIFA

There is really no option but to see if the other countries that vote for the US are interested in breaking away and starting their own tournament. See if the major European teams are interested in playing tournaments in the US, Canada, and other Western European countries in the future instead of South Africa, Qatar, Russia, and Morocco.

If the US, Canada, Mexico, and Western European countries break away, then it will be a huge coup. And the other major powers will have to join at some point in the future. Getting Germany, Italy, France, Spain, England, Belgium, Holland, etc on the same page could be very difficult. But maybe not.

I would melt even harder than when we lost out to Qatar. That was a dark day.

One official who is in regular contact with all of the continental confederations estimated that Morocco has the support of much of Asia and South America, as well as its home continent of Africa, which would put it over the 104 votes needed. All four bid nations cannot vote while the Guatemalan federation is currently suspended.

Other officials questioned the breakdown showing Morocco in a position of strength, saying that while the North American bid's winning margin might be tighter than expected, it would still emerge cleanly on top with the Americas, Oceania, most of Europe and part of Asia backing it.

What did we expect when we elected President Trump???? There shouldn't be politics involved in these bids but other countries know who they like and don't like

That’s funny. I was pretty much laughed out of here for suggesting the same after England and US (but mainly England) were denied bids for 2022/2026.

And I’m not surprised all at the news that Morocco may win the bid. If it does, I lay it firmly at the feet of Trump. Do any of you think that any African or Caribbean or Latin American (or “shithole”) country will vote for the US?

I think we'd get the Caribbean nations based on proximity.

If you're going to elect a guy who says frick you to the international community, should you be shocked when the international community says frick you back?

I mean, if they vote against us because our President isn't a nice guy but vote for countries that use slavery to build the infrastructure needed to host the event, I blame their own lack of moral standards, not anyone on our end.

The US was always going to get some blow back from the arrests we made - all of these guys have been getting paid for years for these votes - and now due to whats happened its a lot harder to milk the cows they've been getting fat off of. Pretty much the more of a $#!thole a country is, the less chance they'll vote for us.

I think something like 12 people voted for the 2018 and 2022 world cups. I think over 200 people can vote now.

You really can't compare past votes with this one.

So basically the African and Asian federations can band together and decide who they want to host?

Yall quickly forget who we are dealing with FIFA, this ultimately boils down to money and people finding a way to get theirs. The Trump excuse is convenient but when Blatter comes out and lobbies for Morocco you have to know its all about money.

It's all bullshite. Trump being an a-hole makes for an easy excuse but it's hard for anyone to take that seriously when Russia and Qatar are considered moral enough to host a World Cup.

There are thousands of people dying in Qatar so that they can host the WC, but at least they don't have a mean president!
