You forgot the best part:

Oh, I see you registered but the other department didn’t get back to me, can you come back tomorrow after they respond?
I’ll let you in on a little secret: they didn’t send that shite till 5 minutes before you showed up.
They were too busy facebooking or talking about their pets.

The HR lady also handles insurance at our company. My wife had to see an oral surgeon last year and this goofy bitch didn't add her to our new policy. She said " well you didn't sign her up when we switched insurance companies ". I said yes I did , so we go back and forth .. finally i tell her I want a copy of my file. Sure enough I did sign her up HR lady responds I'm so sorry let me see what I can do. She calls me up at the end of the work day. " you're just going have to pay it ($1500) I got really rude by this time and was called in by my branch manager and told to drop it... I had to eat that money. frick HR

We’re pretty lucky at our employer. In particular, our benefits/payroll manager knows her stuff and any issues are fixed immediately.

My companies HR department seems to run just fine. Never had any issues with them and neither has anyone else in my office.

HR departments are so useless they frick things up on purpose to give themselves something to do the next day (fixing their frick ups).

other than recruiting and making sure employment laws are followed HR just slows a company down.

We fired our one and only HR worker. Haven’t noticed a difference. In fact, it’s been better lately.

I work for a large corporation and our HR department is only there to cover the companies arse. They also all get hired in as Sr. HR Rep. How the frick do you higher an entry level HR person as Sr. anything? I should have went into HR.

I bet this is part of the problem.
When you have more people working in a department than what is needed, when something needs to be done, everyone assumes the other person will take care of it. Or there isn't enough work to keep them busy so they just think "I can frick off right now, I will get that done in a little while" and then they end up either forgetting about it or figure that "when it becomes an issue they will contact us about it".

As I work in IT, I'd pass that blame to your manager. He probably told the department on Sunday night a new hire was coming in.

Your HR department is a direct reflection of your company's senior management.
The HR Manager should have equal intelligence and backbone as the department managers, or he/she will get run over to the point of diminishing returns. And the HR manager should hire only qualified assistants because they are a reflection of him/her.
If your company does not care enough to ensure an HR department that employees are proud to have, then shame on them.
I suggest there's a deeper issue than just having crappy HR folks. Any department is susceptible to having crappy people. Why is your company allowing it?

I once worked for a firm where the top rain making partner (who brought in millions of dollars worth of business per year) had one assistant. The head of HR had three assistants. It blew my mind.

I’ve been in IT in various roles for almost 20 years. I’ve not gotten a single PC request from HR.
