We don't have the elf but NillaWafer is only 2. My wife hates the idea as much as I do, but if NW wants to do the whole elf thing I'm sure we will. Just like the rest of you, we'd put up with it to make out kid happy.
Doesn't mean we'll blast the pics all over Facebook though.

My kids love it. Sad that some of you don’t care about the happiness of your own children.

My son was born in 2005, a friend of ours told us about a book signing for a Christmas book in 2006 or 2007. We went buy and bought one and had the book signed by the author, little did we know how popular this would become. my wife and I hate it but my 6 year old daughter loves it.

I agree completely. I don’t give a damn if people don’t want an elf tradition, but I don’t understand the extreme negative reaction this topic provokes in people. Our kid loves her elf. The window for believing in magic is small and so fun. She will be a bitchy teen soon enough. I love seeing things through her eyes, where she still believes anything is possible. Her excitement to go find her elf every morning is contagious. If it felt like a forced tradition, we’d stop. It doesn’t. She talks about her elf all year, and looks forward to seeing him. This is probably her last year to believe, so it’s not some huge burden.

I hope you can get over the heavy burden of taking 30 seconds to move a stuffed toy every night. LOL
That's the problem. All these overachieving parents who have their elves do all this crazy stuff at night. Which takes more than 30 seconds to set up. And then their kids tell your kids at school. And your kids ask why their elves aren't doing these creative things. I dislike those parents with too much time on their hands.

It's fun.
God forbid you do something that brings extra joy to your children around Christmas time.
Some of you people that post here are the most miserable POS douchebags I've ever come across, you just simply fricking suck.

My daughter just turned 4, and she looked for her elf every day for about two weeks. She assumed that because all her friends had one, that she did too, but he hid really well. Wife picked one up last week. Her excitement level when she found him for the first time was worth it. I'm sure the shine will wear off, but she loves to wake up and go find the elf.

If I'm ever in a position where I feel compelled to do Elf of the Shelf, my biggest challenge is going to be avoiding completely inappropriate stagings, like a month-long cautionary tale culminating in the Elf's overdose and/or suicide. May God gave mercy on the souls of my future offspring.

It's a stupid trendy thing that people will look back on in 20 years and wonder wtf they were doing. But we're supposed to pretend that parents who don't do this dumb shite are ruining Christmas for their kids because other parents who do it like to guilt trip the ones who don't.

Dear lord. If you don't want people to prod you on the internet, KEEP YOUR DEEPLY PERSONAL INFORMATION OFF THE INTERNET!

My wife had an elf decoration for Christmas already when all this crap started. He isn't the one from the book. Basically we pick one spot for this elf we have and it sits in same spot all Christmas season until Christmas Eve night. When we put out presents, that's when he moves.
Like my youngest has said before that our Elf is lazy and sits on his nuts all the time.
Not doing something different every night. Screw that.

uhh.... why are you pretending that this was an infertility joke as opposed to a "no man will want you" joke? And why would he even know enough about your fertility situation that he could insult you by making a fertility joke?

parenting on the internet
if you don't do everything exactly as someone else, you're a bad parent and should feel ashamed
we don't do the Elf, we like making our own unique traditions, but I'm sure if my daughter ever really pushed for it (she is 4), we would cave

Everyone on this board knows. Nurse is an open book on here. I don't understand her lack of desire to retain even an ounce on anonymity.

Fair enough. I don't recall her mentioning that. But my memory only goes back like 2 weeks.
You're right though. If you're going to be open about your life then you have to be okay with people taking shots at you. I'm open about a lot of things...but I know how cool I am so the haters don't phase me. nah mean?

The Crossfit Reaction, if obsessive people put it everywhere on social media and don't stop posting about it; normal people backlash and make fun of it.

Not even close.
We do it and neither of us have Facebook.
Should tell you something about what the real problem is ..... Facebook and the attention whore culture it promotes.
Not a little elf.

Our son is 7. Probably the last year.
I think this is about a 10-12 year thing. Maybe longer in areas. Maybe it was a thing in some community or country and Facebook made it take off.
