Ok, you're right.
I'm insecure about a toy elf that my two kids like talking about for few days out of the year.
Perhaps you should go back if you have time and read the negative replies in this thread.

We do it. It really sucks moving them every night and coming up with new ideas, but the kids really love it.

Which is an absurd statement on your part.
Nobody is judging others for not doing what they do.
The fact that people lash out against something intended to bring joy to kids around the Christmas season is the only thing worthy of being labeled absurd.

I have a 5 month old, and grandma already got us the elf. I'm against it, but of course my wife gets whatever she wants. I'm hoping my kid is smart enough to call bullshite as soon as he can talk.
Here's my main problem with it. With Santa, we're talking about a real man who delivers presents. Yeah, there's all the magical stuff about flying reindeer and what not, but it's still just a guy who delivers presents. There's enough there to be somewhat believable by a kid.
With the elf, it's obviously an inanimate object. Do we really want our kids to believe that an inanimate object is alive? Or better yet, realize it's not alive but that mom and dad are fricking nuts acting like it is? Do we really need to invent more lies to feed to our kids for them to enjoy Christmas and be behaved?

My one 6 year old just yesterday saw the back of the Elf on the Shelf from our back patio since the Elf was hanging from the blinds in the kitchen window.
He said to me, "Dad, it's funny how the Elf has a tag on him just like all my other stuffed animals that came from the store."
He certainly put me on the spot ,and the best I could come back with was, "That is funny."
Safe to say this is the last year for that, thankfully.

My boys are 10 and 7. My ex and I started doing it about 4 or 5 years ago.
Now, my current g/f and I do it. She has a son and they've done it for the last few years.
It's just another thing to get kids excited about Christmas. That's all.
After the kids go to bed, or in the morning when you wake up, you move your elf to a different location. The kids go look for him each morning to see where he's at now.
It's fun for the kids.
And I'm 41... with full custody of my 2 blue-eyed, first-round draft picks. IF my boys like it, I try to like.... it ain't about me. It's about them.

My conundrum is he's really smart and can figure shite out. His twin brother is soooo aloof about any and everything. So I have to figure out if I should tell him it's not real then let him know if he spills that info to his brother, he's a dead man. Or just let it ride with the concern that he may tell his brother and ruin it for him.
