What is the "Perfect" film, in your opinion?

What film has it all?
All the Perfect elements and blends of casting, writing, directing, cinematography, etc?
Is there one that just stands above all else in comparison? If so, which one and why does it appeal to you?
Personally, I'd have to say Jaws. The differences the film took from the source material were great, Robert Shaw and Richard dreyfuss were brilliant. It was also a brilliant move to use the POV of the shark

I rate movies on 1-5 scale, but there is a special 6 rating for movies that just dominate every category. not to say they are perfect, but they still hit every nail on the head. of those 6s, the two movies that come to mind when I think "perfect" (as in, I wouldn't change a thing about them) are No Country For Old Men and Pan's Labyrinth

i'm not going to say it's my favorite film or the "best" film ever, but i'm going with Barry Lyndon
if we're talking about pure execution of filmaking, that's going to be very tough to beat
it's probably the apex of the technical aspect of film photography. from the lighting to the cinematography to the locations and costumes...it's essentially unbeatable. the acting is great, the story is good, and the music is everlasting

While the Princess Bride may not be the best movie ever, I would say it's closest to perfect. It blends a bit of every genre together seamlessly, comedy, drama, action, love story, scifi/fantasy, horror and it appeals to both adults and children at the same time without being skewed too far in either direction. It's something both a 40 year old or a 10 year old would want to watch on their own.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Patton
No Country for Old Men
Blade Runner
The Outlaw Josey Wales
These are my Top 5, overall - if I have to go with 1, I go with Blade Runner (Final Cut). It's difficult to exclude such great films as Godfather (I & II), Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, as well as classics such a Some Like it Hot - but you have to draw a line somewhere.
My "classic" nominee: Casablanca.
My comedy nominee: Ghostbusters
The laughably fake shark disqualifies this film, IMHO - although the acting and cinematography were fantastic. Yeah, Moby Dick isn't exactly an original story idea, but other than the fakey shark, Spielberg does a great job with it.

When you have Kubrick just showing off what he can do - including both his experience at that point combined with an unnerving technical mastery of the science of filming - the film is an impressive accomplishment if one only considers the technical aspects of it. I'm just not crazy about the film as a film.

i really like it and i know i'm probably the only one who will knight for it, but it's not a bad experience
it gets called boring and i get it, but if i put 2001, which is also "boring", people wouldn't have the same comments
i think it's probably the best version of the "icarus" story in film history

For me, the perfect film is the Shawshank Redemption. I love everything about the movie, and I can't tell you how many times I have seen it. I can't think of a single thing I'd change about the movie.

Throne of Blood
Underratyed: The Thing. It's about as pitch perfect a film as you can get.

Barry Lyndon is really underrated, even by Kubrick fans like me. It is a technical masterpiece and had me completely engulfed in the story when I first saw it. I've always preferred 2001 but maybe that's because I've seen it more, including on the big screen.
I'd also call Back to the Future, The Two Towers, and maybe Pulp Fiction perfect.

While I'm with you on the love of The Thing, I'm also going old school:
Casablanca.
Not only is the movie perfect, it's timing of release was also perfect. The Marseillaise scene is probably the greatest moment of film history, as actors who in real life were fighting Nazi oppression sang a song in character in defiance against them.

LA Confidential
When I think about my favorite movies most were produced b/t 1994-2000 LA Confidential is not my personal favorite but I think it stands out as a perfect film from my favorite era. The writing, acting, casting, cinematography were perfect imo.
