The Exorcist scared the shite out of me when I was like 6. I don't like watching anything to do with exorcisms as a result.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Poltergeist
The Dark Crystal
Pet Sematary
The Blair Witch Project (not scary, but unique, and cool to watch in the theater)
Worst was Paranormal Activity - totally lame

Similar to many responses, I saw Ghost Story when I was about 8-10 yrs old at a friend's house and it still freaks me out a bit now. It has a lot of lame scenes but the scary ones and the ending are good.

Not really scary but my dad use to rent me Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH from the local video store when I was a kid well I just saw for the first time in years on Tv a year back and it took me till then to realize how scary The Great Owl and Nicodemus both are

Had never seen Event Horizon and after seeing it mentioned so many times in this thread I tried to watch it last night. Well it was so terrifying I fell asleep 3/4 of the way through lol
You didn't see it in the proper context and never will.
Most of us who saw it were younger when it came out and it looked like a sci fi movie like Star Trek. And it was kinda like Star Trek until...it wasn't.

This
I was around 10-11, and as I recall the trailers made it out to be a sci-fi suspense/thriller film, the horror aspect was grossly underplayed. At no point going into it did I have the slightest inclination what I was getting into.
And it plods along like your typical sci-fi space peril flick until HOLY shite BALLS and you don't sleep for a week. Whoever called the film completely psychotic nailed it.

Event Horizon was one of the most unsettling movies I've ever seen.
Took my wife to see The Grudge (I think) and she made us get up and leave 5 minutes in when the girl stuck her head in the attic and saw a creepy face. Still have not seen the movie.
In college took a chick to see the teeny slayer movie Swim Fan and got a bj in back of theatre so that added a suspense element to an otherwise terrible movie.
I'm also terrified of the Rocky Horror picture show, but I don't care for trannies so that's probably it.

The poughkeepsie Tapes fricked me up pretty good.
Sinister also.
Those types of movies really get to me.

To this day I still have trouble watching The Exorcist by myself.
I watched it as a little kid. At that time, I could not sleep for days.

Nothing as scary as when you were a little kid and you didn't understand what you were watching. So mine goes back to something in the same style as Blair Witch, but well before Blair Witch.
It's called The McPherson Tape, it's about a family getting abducted by Aliens and it was made in 83. I was a really little kid when I stumbled upon this one day and it was presented on TV like being a real documentary, so I thought the whole thing was real. I was fricking disturbed about getting abducted by aliens for months cause of this shite. Found it on Youtube, it's as terrible as you would expect a 83 shaky cam movie to be....

I'm not much a horror fan, I guess I prefer more Stephen King style scary movies now.

When I was a kid, Poltergeist scared the frick out of me. I remember we had it on Betamax and my sister (no pics) watched that movie all of the time.

while we're on the subject of scary movies! LINK looks pretty good only downside I see is that it looks like it theatres a week after thanksgiving. which means it'll be debuting right at the beginning of December too close to Christmas probably get a lot of backlash from the holiday crowd that prefer holiday themed movies around that time. still may check it out

The first horror movie I ever saw was Pumpkinhead. I watched it at a neighbors house. It terrified me so much that I could not sleep with lights off for awhile. I remember screaming for my parents and them coming into my to tell me "its not real".
More recently, I thought the first Insidious was very scary.
But probably the scariest movie I've ever seen was the documentary "The Nightmare" about sleep paralysis.

So much to take away from that movie. The chiropractor's monologue being the centerpiece.
As for the Exorcist, read the book if you never have. It goes down the rabbit hole.

I always check these threads hoping to find a movie I’ve never seen before listed.
Having said that:
Nightmare on Elm St (watched when I was 5, scared the shite out of me)
Event Horizon
Exorcist
Insidious
The Ring
The Strangers
All of these separate themselves from the rest.
