re: I have heard that "The Patriot" is terribly inaccurate and offensive to the British

quote:
Tarleton and his Tories proceeded to shoot at the Patriots after their surrender, a move that spawned the term “Tarleton’s Quarter,” which in the eyes of the Patriots meant a brutal death at the hands of a cowardly foe. The Continentals lost 113 killed and 203 captured in the Battle of Waxhaws;
I know about this event. It is also touched on in the movie as well. According to an eye witness, after the white flag was raised, Tarleton's horse was shot out from under him. After that happened, the Loyalists thought the surrendering troops had just killed their commander so they went and killed all the Continentals.
This is not even comparable to the burning of a church full of townspeople.

Is this thread a coordinated troll or are yall really arguing over the historical accuracy of this movie?

I'm just discussing history with the other poster now.

I always just thought The Patriot was kind of meh. Not a very well made movie.
But, I'll never forgive Gibson for not giving me true schiltrons in Braveheart. Heck, I don't think they even showed the anti cavalry ground preparation.

Same here. Not very well done.

There are plenty of movies bashing the US. I'm fine with it.

All I'm going to say is Tavington is the greatest shot in the world. Sniping men riding at full gallop, 80-100 yards away with a flintlock pistol, probably a smoothbore at that.
Wow
Wow

no one hates it because the british supposedly are bothered by it, which I doubt is even true. We hate it because it's hysterically overwrought, overacted tripe that tries to be high drama but falls comically short. Any worthwhile action scenes are outweighed by the laughable and manipulative "drama" of the story.
Serious question, what hollywood movie is not all of this? I mean seriously? The Patriot is not a documentary anymore than Dunkirk, Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, etc.
Everything you stated, all the movies above have additionally.
So apparently you just don't like movies that are based on past events?

you are desperately talking out of your arse. It has nothing to do with fact vs fiction, that's not my point. The Patriot was not well made. It's unintentionally campy. All of the other movies you just named received critical acclaim and won or were nominated for a host of awards. The Patriot received no critical acclaim and received no accolades whatsoever, for good reason.

Pretty much this. I mean, a ton of movies screw up history unintentionally or intentionally. I mean, how sanitized was the Powhattan character in Pocahontas. Dude was a conqueror of other tribes and I'm pretty sure he was also an enslaver of other Native Americans as well. But he comes across as just the opposite in the movie. That always stuck in my craw a bit.
It's just that The Patriot wasn't good (IMHO).

Yes, it was.

Who said it's unintentional?

quote:Who, Bono? No, he was a cardboard cutout.
You didn't think the villain was well done?
quote:I suppose not. And I would argue the genre was somewhat misrepresented in the marketing. I thought it would be a semi-serious period piece. Instead, it was lowest-common-denominator silliness.
You just don't like the entire genre of movies?
quote:Diehard has never pretended to be anything other than Diehard.
That's like complaining that diehard sucks because there was too much bullshite terrorism and action sequences.
quote:Since then, not much. It takes a lot in the era of modern home theater to get me out. Notably, I saw Dunkirk last week - probably the first one since Interstellar.
Honest question, do you ever go to the a movies? If The Patriot is the most disappointed you've ever been in a movie I have to assume you've barely seen any movies and you've been lucky with the ones you've seen.
quote:Sure. So is every major release.
Well acted

Well scripted
quote:Sure.
Well shot

Watching this movie on Starz this morning confirms that you're all insane.
It never claims to be a historically accurate movie, but it is an awesome popcorn movie.

Don't want movies made that deal with a war that you lost?
Don't lose.
Don't lose.

Don't care if the movie is good or bad, Gibson ended up making Get the Gringo, so every bad movie he ever made is forgiven, even what women want.

I'm offended at how bad a movie it is.

The Patriot was actually nominated for 3 Academy Awards (Cinematography, Original Score, and Sound Mixing). And it's actually only six points lower than The Avengers on Metacritic. It received decent reviews upon its release. Just don't use the film in history class when you are discussing the Revolutionary War.
