Nola.com article on fish possession limits

I strongly disagree. The definition of "fish" and "finfish" does not include parts or filets in my freezer, as the "fish" is no longer a "fish" and has been reduced to food. Law also specifically says you can't filet on a boat or have trout parts on a boat, so that's a red herring as to filets in a home freezer.

If LDWF thinks filets in a freezer count as "fish", that necessarily means every single filet counts as 1 fish, and every single trout filet must be 12" long. How can it not? There is no statute or reg which says something like "2 filets = 1 fish" or that "filets can be less than 12". If it's a "fish", it has to be 12" (for trout, duh).

Some states do in fact have statutes which specifically address fish parts/filets in freezer at home, Louisiana does not.

Spokesman for LDWF (who is "media relations", not enforcement) is wrong.

Fwiw. I've found most game wardens to be reasonable people. They like the same stuff we do, treat them with respect and they won't get picky about minor details.

So what are they going to do. Go to your home and search your freezer? I guess it's time to get that body out of there.

Since there is no possession limit for saltwater (technicallu the same as the daily bag limit), this would mean you cannot keep any fish above your daily bag.

No way this article is true. Besides, isn't a possession limit defined as what you can have in your possession between the field and your home?

Would that mean thats illegal to purchase a lot of fish at the store? Or maybe you better keep your receipt

What about taxidermy? Can a deer mount be displayed outside of hunting season?

The people that answer the phone for ldwf are cursing Adam for opening his "technically" mouth.

You need a law to tell you that?

When my grandparents lived in Minnesota my grand father would get nervous when the freezer started getting overloaded from all our fishing. Apparently wardens coming around checking freezers is a real thing there.

If LDWF is coming to your house to check your freezer, you probably got a whole lot worse problems than being over a possession limit on fish.

Got a wife and kids? That should be an extra 50 trout you can have in your freezer per person that lives there.

This is what was explained to me back in the 70s. Not a new concept. The only time it is ever really applied, in my experience, is when poachers are busted or people illegally selling game fish.

Father actually got checked yesterday by a warden while fishing yesterday. He asked him about this and said it is true about total possession limit, but they are more concerned with the guys catching a limit and swapping ice chests and catching another limit and are monitoring landings watching for people doing it.

I just label all my fish fillets as "Bream" on the outside of the ziploc. No posession limit on them babies. LOL.

I think the filet in the freezer thing could easily be gone around.
"I only catch white trout officer."

Better question is would this extend to ducks and geese? Possession on specklebellies is 6 and I know there are more than 6 geese in my freezer right now.
