Get you a Beretta PX4 Storm baw. Extremely well priced and smooth shooting.

Sig P228 (if you can find it), P229 or P320. None have thumb safeties, but Sig makes pistols about as good as you can make them.

You didn't mention any of these, but have you looked into Tauri, Sigmas, Lorcins, Kel-Tecs, Ravens or Jennings.

S&W M&P Shield. I bought one Friday and already put 400 rounds through it. I love this thing and will be easy to conceal.

I picked up an M&P Shield in .40 last week and love it's size for an all around gun. It's my CC gun but, I think it fits the bill for all around. It feels great in the hand.

This is the exact reason I have my Beretta 92FS. Had it for years, no complaints.

W/o giving a little more info about the gun's intended purpose, you're mainly going to get "I've got the __________ and I like it a lot." Having said that, I like my Kahr CM9. It's an "all around gun " for concealed carry.

CZ 75 or Beretta 92.

CZ's bring you the control layout of a 1911, but with a DA/SA ability and 15+ rounds in the mag. Very well made and easy to shoot accurately.

Beretta gives you a very smooth, accurate shooter, 15+ rounds in the mag, and the added draw of being what our military carries.

If you feel part of the fun of owning a pistol is being able to shoot it all day at the range without getting sore, and you want something that will last and your kids may one day want it, either of these are winners.

Sigs are fine pistols, but lack the safety. If you're feeling adventurous, you might consider the Arex Rex Zero, it's pretty similar to a Sig with a safety attached.

Glock 19, since you already dropped the thumb safety might as well drop the no glock thing.

If you don't plan on carrying the gun, there is no reason to not get a full sized one.

That being said, if you insist on having a manual thumb safety, I would vote FN FNP/FNX or HK P30/USP.

If you are willing to spend $1K, Browning Hi-power is the 9mm classic - all blued steel, hammer fired, single action, safety. Heirloom pistol.
