First off, I've played the game for about a total of two hours in my lifetime, so going in I was a pretty casual fan. I don't know jack about the game aside from it being Alliance vs Horde. I honestly think if you have not played the game, a bit of this movie is going to be lost on you, at least it was on me.

With that said, this might be one of the worst movies I've seen in a while. A story that's all over the place and feels like you are thrown into the middle of it as opposed to it being explained and introduced to us. Pacing is terrible and it's painfully obvious that they tried to cram way too much into it to establish a franchise. The characters are all poorly written imo and the story is very predictable. The CGI is great, but nothing you haven't seen before and again, almost all of the characters are completely forgettable. The main hero loses his son and while this is a spoiler, the son has no major role, on top of that, all the father can think about is flirting with this orc chick. Just honestly one of the most forgettable casts I've seen in a long time and I'd recommend you save your money.

Tl;dr The movie is a mess and the characters are completely forgettable while trying to set up a franchise.

Well the downfall of WoW was their pandering to casuals.

I'm glad they didn't pander again to people like you in their movie.

If you know anything about the lore behind it then it was an awesome movie and I can't wait for more.

Pretty sure the lore in this film predates even Warcraft and definitely predates WoW. Thrall is a baby in this movie, isn't he?

I believe it is set in between Warcraft I and II

From the previews it's pretty much Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, but it's "WoW"ified. I played the shite out of every single Warcraft game, so I'm gonna see this, but my expectations are very very low.

I have no doubt this movie will bomb big time. You can't make a movie that panders only to hardcore gamers AND has a terrible trailer.

Ok yeah. I was thinking of Warcraft 3 when I said it predates Warcraft. It was my first Warcraft game so I always forget there were two before it and just think of it as "Warcraft" in my mind.

There really is a lot of fantastic lore in that universe. They could do so much on film with it. I will be really sad if this movie bombs because it might turn Hollywood off of taking chances on video game franchises and DAMMIT I WANT MY HALO MOVIE.

I'm pretty sure that it is doing very well internationally. Chinese love them some simple cgi fests.

So basically they made a movie that only those who play the game religiously would like? That's a smart marketing strategy.

I can't remember the last trailer that had me so disinterested in seeing a film. I hope that the fans of the game get a few movies out of this franchise, but, man, that just looks like another boring CGI fantasy film.

I was never optimistic about this movie. Not because I didn't think Warcraft COULDN'T appeal to new audiences, but because of the execution of the movie itself.

I've been beating this drum over and over. People want more "real" and less CGI in their movies. Fully CGI characters are hard to relate to. Sure, there are exceptions, but even a great story, like the Hobbit, suffers in movie form from CGI exhaustion.

If you can't do a live action movie without Warcraft's level of CGI, then you need to make it fully animated. Unleash the restrictions of reality, and no one will expect it to be bound by what's real. Warcraft could have been made into a high quality animated film. It's animated cinematic openings for its games are top-notch. That's what they should have gone for.
