On the one hand, at least this isn't a random act of violence. But it was done in one of the most well-known tourist areas of the city.
At least some people did what the police in New Orleans seem incabaple of doing - tracked the piece of trash down and beat him half to death. Hopefully the other half comes very slowly.

Visitors to one of the top tourist spots in the French Quarter witnessed a violent scene on Mother’s Day.
“Everyone kept yelling, ‘There's a stabbing in the square! There's a stabbing in the square!’ Police are running all over the place,” Russell Vonala said, describing the chaotic scene inside Jackson Square Sunday afternoon.
New Orleans police responded to calls of a stabbing at 2:03 p.m. Sunday on St. Ann Street near Chartres Street. In a statement to media, NOPD Public Information Officer Arron Looney said: “Upon arrival at the scene and during investigation, police learned that Everett Williams allegedly confronted his ex-girlfriend and attacked her. As numerous male subjects reportedly attempted to stop Williams, he produced a knife and stabbed one of the men several times.”
Bystanders chased down the accused stabber and beat him with sticks and a brick. One witness said Williams' head injuries were so severe from the beating, he thought he was dead.
Another witness said he flagged down a nearby Louisiana state trooper, who arrested Williams. NOPD said Williams is being treated at a hospital for his injuries and will be booked once he is released. They have not released any specifics on the charges Williams could face. The victim stabbed in Jackson Square was taken away in an ambulance and is under medical care as well.
Both violent altercations happened when the area was crowded with families, locals and visitors. “Other people look at me and say, 'Oh you work in the most beautiful place. It's so fabulous,'” Holly Sarre said. “And to tell you the truth, it's not.”
Sarre is a fifth-generation New Orleans artist whose stand near the iconic St. Louis Cathedral was the scene of the stabbing.
“This is one of the most important squares in the city,” Sarre said. “I mean, every tourist that comes here, comes through this square. And if you can't keep the crime down on this particular one block in the city, what hope is there for people who live in the Ninth Ward or other places that are dangerous? It's really a travesty.”
When asked about patrols in or near Jackson Square, Looney said the NOPD does not release specifics about where their officers are deployed, but he said officers are routinely placed in the area. According to its records, the first NOPD officer arrived on the scene six minutes after the NOPD was notified.

It's not a random act of violence. I'm surprised they had room for this to make the news in New Orleans. The random violence is what's scary.

Landrieu has lost control of the Quarter

This is the concerning aspect. The fact that some guy attacked his ex isn't really that big of a deal. The fact that NOPD wasn't 90 seconds away in the middle of the FQ is a problem.

Just think how many people an active shooter could've taken out in 6+ minutes. He'd have time to stop and eat a PB&J

Did the statue itself do the stabbing?

Just wait until the statues come down amirite

It's obvious that the only course of action here is to remove all statues in the city.

Sort of off topic, but where did they come up with sticks large enough to beat someone almost to death with? Are we talking tree limbs or lumber from a construction site, or did they have sticks with them for some reason?

6 minute response time to Jackson Square? Dang

There must be some kind of mistake. The OT said this only happens at like three in the morning and if you are walking in a bad area.
