Absolutely in no way, shape, or form should this be the coach's decision. Pass it on the to the parents. They can help keep them informed, but that's overstepping their bounds.
I think you're right on --the HS coaches should see their role as being informational.
Just so we're clear, I don't think there is any justification for a HS coach to withhold letters.

Although this is wrong for a coach to do, what exactly was this dad looking for digging through boxes in a coaches office?

Disagree wholeheartedly. Anything to get these kids exposure and chances to play at the next level is a good thing.

I don't think jimmy even has a back round in journalism. He's just taken to it to get exposure for kids

This is why Saban has mastered the art of finding out who the biggest influencers are in recruits' lives, outside of the HS Coach and rewarding them handsomely for this influence.

Aliquippa, that's one of the teams in Pennsylvania on Friday Night Tykes Steel Country.

Not saying this doesn't happen, but if that coach in the video was really keeping all those schollarship letters from the kid, why wouldn't he just throw them away instead of keeping them in a huge arse box for anyone who just so happens to go visit the school to come across??

whats he waiting on to expose them?
and what are the coaches motives for doing this
Wondering the same thing. If he's so angry, why hasn't he name dropped already?

If he's smart, he'll call a lawyer. The potential of a class action lawsuit against a school system will get a lot of attention.

Could this be a case where a coach is a paid assistant at particular schools football camps and he doesn't want to jeopardize that gig? Maybe not, but the motive has to be love for a certain school or money.

Again how do you propose to get the address of a minor legally?
What are the illegal ways to get the address of a minor?
Regardless, it's pretty simple these days to get the address of a family if someone wanted to. Like someone else said, it's pretty lazy if you're just firing off letters to HS coaches, and not doing your own due diligence.

Maybe he talked to a coach and they asked why he hadn't responded and then he just followed the trail from there. As a parent, if my kid was a junior or below he just might make not go to that school anymore.

A lot of times it's not as sinister as you might think. It's not a coach getting paid issue as much as a coach not wanting to deal with a Prima Donna issue. Some coaches think too much college attention is a bad thing as kids will stop working hard and rest on their laurels.
This is not my stance, just telling you how some of them think and why things are held.

Look, if it's so easy to legally get the contact info of a minor, tell me how to do it.
Do you become a social media creep and beg for contact info?
Do you use a phonebook?
I mean seriously, let's say you want to contact all the guys who made all state at a certain position... How do you do it?
I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just implying that the path of least resistance is contacting the kids coach. It's what almost anyone would do.

Simple, send it to his high school under HIS name.....which they did! This coach has an agenda, and it's his own.
frick guys like that coach. Your son is getting interest from top institutions like ND, Duke, Virginia, sec schools, etc.
I would sue for theft. Surely there's a law against receiving and hiding someone else's mail, right?
Sure the schools could eventually find him, but how many times have you heard a recruit say "well X has been on me the longest or showed me the most interest"
Coach is trying to steer kids somewhere early, before they hear from others.

You're getting caught-up in the "minor" part. These kids, more than likely, have at least one adult they live with, so you can find the address for the adult, then just address the letter to the prospect.

I would not say that you would be considered a "creep" if you work for a university that is trying to offer a kid a scholarship. Besides, these kids are so well versed in social media these days that I doubt they would care if you asked for their address so that you could send them information on your school.
It's not like you would be some random fan who wants to be buddies with a 17 year old.

I could find where those kids lived within a day if I wanted to spend the time on it, probably less if I really put thought into it.

Right, but that's being lazy, and obviously not as effective as contacting the kid directly.
