You have to go on here to find out how much your wife makes? Either you're a retarded husband or a liar. Women doctors don't marry retarded liars.

Wow. Now that makes me feel bad. I give no shits about my pay in Terms of "problems with healthcare costs". But my physicians are amazing people and that bums me out.

Those numbers are of course averages. I imagine they swing wildly with specialties and locations within the marked regions.

Medicine is becoming less and less desirable as a field. A general practice or family doc probably makes what a good plumber makes.

My friend and his wife had to uproot their lives when she graduated. They went to Dallas where she could pull $140-150k. Staying in Houston was mid $90's.

Certainly.

E.g., Salary range for an Ob/Gyn at Kaiser is $162,871 - $341,366.

OTOH, an MD entrepreneur who is self-employed and owns his medical practice, etc. could top-out far higher.

I will back up Jenn, I have a cousin who works as an RN up north. Her and her coworkers easily clear 200K. Most of them work for Kaiser and they're very well compensated, even new hires.

Which is freaking ridiculous. No doubt they were contracts negotiated by the nursing unions because patient care "suffers" when they only make 40/hr.

No it isn't. But your presumptions about physician income being higher in California, especially at Kaiser, are false. MDs in the Southeast absolutely make more.

In part, that has to do with traditionally higher numbers of employed MDs in California as opposed to private practice elsewhere. In fact, assuming your personal income assertions accurate, you're earning very nearly as much as the average California MD.

Just FWIW.
MD salaries are suppressed in NYC as well. And it's not just MDs, it's other higher level medical professions too.

In my profession, major cities on the west coast get paid significantly more than we do here in NYC.

Doctors in my field (I'm not a doctor) can make more money by going to the midwest or southeast. Same thing with at least one other profession in my field. I make more here than I would out there, but my salary is still suppressed relative to my cost of living here. Still, it's worth it IMO.

If I moved back to Arkansas, I'd take a 30% pay cut. I'd do better relative to cost of living, but I don't really want to live in Little Rock as a 30 year old single man.

I would absolutely jump over to the west coast though. I'd make about 15% more there and cost of living would be the same or slightly lower.

RN here... what hospital pays $61 for new grad staff RN's? This place has to be a hell hole right?? And half time to be on call? I'm about to book a flight to Cali! You can have my referral bonus.

I'm sorry does pt care "suffer" when MDs take a pay cut? The two issues are completely separate.

How do you deserve to make more than the person that tells you what to do?

How does pay throughout a doctor's career work? I know obviously you have to build a reputation and patient base, but do you rypically see pay increase over time. Or if a doctor is really good, will they basically start raking it in at say 35, then pretty much make a steady living (adjusted for inflation).

I know people in my field making significant money, but you know it takes time to climb the company ladder. It's not the same. When I see a anesthesiologist salary of 350k+, is that someone with 15 years, or can a buddy who finished up a few years ago be pulling that. I realize it is average, but wondering how "experience dependent" it is.

Depends on the physician but majority keep a steady salary when adjusted for inflation.

Well sir, if the person who tells me what to do were so smart they would have negotiated better rates for themselves. What is deserved vs. what is received is the responsibility of the employee to figure out. If you find it to be unfair I would suggest researching pay rates prior to taking out educational debt. I did. I spent 15k on my education and the return on the investment has been superb.

Edit-I work in the Bay Area. The hospitals here are all county, Kaiser or Sutter. All of those contracts are readily available online....no referral bonus needed ;)

To summarize: don't go into medicine for the money. If you have done so in the past 15 years or so, you weren't paying attention. Job security is usually pretty great though, and some fields will allow you to move just about wherever you want to go.

Job market is pretty tight in coastal cities for most of the specialties at the top of the list in the OP.

Did not know this. Probably poorly represented ergo useless?

Only union I've heard of is for the residents at UW in Seattle and it's pretty new.
