You didn't negotiate your pay rate. The California nursing unions did when they strong armed the hospital administrations by threatening a strike.

Highly variable. Salaried docs working for hospital have great starting salaries, don't have to worry about overhead, but they're never going to increase yearly income by more than say 25%, adjusted for inflation. There are production bonuses that experienced docs tend to hit more often. But the ceiling is not much higher than starting salary when you are under the umbrella of a big organization.

On the other hand, if you start solo or join a small group your starting salary could be much much lower but the pay ceiling and risk are much higher. Hang a shingle in a business park or strip mall and it could take 2-3 years to even take home a check. Some fail and join a big group but some work their arse off and after 15 years could be making $1M / year as an experienced subspecialist. Same thing with dentistry.

I'm not going to get into the discussion of how much doctors and nurses make or should make because I'm totally ign or ant about that, but last week I went to my ENT for sinus problems. I was sitting in a waiting room with another dozen or so patients (it's a two doctor office), my name was called, and I was walked down a hallway with little examining rooms on each side and was shown into a room at the far end of the hallway.

As I sat there waiting, the door of the room hadn't latched shut and the door had drifted open. I watched the two ENTs go from little room to little room. I thought to myself that I never could bring myself to go from little room to little room all day looking down people's throat, up their nose, or in their ears, no matter how much money it paid.

And I thought of the things that other doctors do, like doing colonoposies. Couldn't imagine that no matter how much money I was paid.

The last strike at my facility was residents not nurses. In fact my facility has not had a nursing strike in almost 30 years. We are also not part of the large nursing Union and as I mentioned are the lowest paid in the area. Our raises are based on COLAs and I don't know if you heard but the it is increasing exponentially these days. How do so many of you speak with authority on an issue you know so little about? I would never speak out of turn on something I am undereducated on....it makes you look stupid.

Yes they do. My wife works for radiologists and I don't think any of them pull in less then 6 hundo per year.

Regardless of what jenn says the top 10% of nurses in Cali make 150 and top 5 make 175.....so she is speaking for the top 1% but of course this is the OT.

edit-I posted the link to several contracts. I took it down. You are administration and have the time to do your own research. IDGAF if you believe what they make out here or not. Hell keep not believing so more RNs don't come out here and drive the pay down. Sure I make 24 bucks and hour and the top 10% make 150k a year...sounds reasonable for the bay!
