Seems like parents are too quick to jump the gun on their kids being the next Cal Ripken. You can't pay your way to a college baseball/softball scholarship

You should sit in the stands at rec baseball games in Denham or Livingston. Everyone's kid that plays is the next savior of LSU baseball.

Timely article here - one Kenner park basically lost all it's rec players, so it's going to repurpose itself as a host site for travel teams.

My opinion, the elite level player (Upper AAA to Major) should stay in travel ball. The average player (Lower AAA and below) should stay in the rec leagues. youd get better coaching and the system would probably flourish

Just so many parents that think their children are so good and that everyone should get to play. The sooner they figure out that they might not play in high school the better. No one is willing to put in the work to get better

Too bad the kids can't play both rec and travel ball. Travel ball is giving a lot of parent false hopes. Especially when they are 12 and under.

My hope was that my kid got to play on a team with kids who could play baseball, or at least show the slightest bit of athletic ability and desire to compete. Mission accomplished.

they are behind the Softball fiend on the north side of the park. The new section of the park is the south side where the new 4 plex is.

So next to the High school field, right?

Let me offer some advice to the parents in here from someone who played the original "travel ball" sport. I grew up a high level tennis player. Due to competition and the nature of the sport, one had to travel the entire country and focus solely on tennis. It was a freaking grind a lot of the time. I resented my dad at times for making me miss a lot of normal things growing up entails. I saw some kids completely lose relationships with their parents. It just isn't natural to have a parent drive a child that young for a sport. Now, my parents were level headed so I had a great relationship with them. But it was still extremely hard at times.

You work with WG?

Yes I do. I brought my kid to him for a tryout and left coaching a team.

I'd like to think I'm doing it right. We play AAA, majors, and will play up an age sometimes.

I encourage all of the parents to have the boys play another sport with NO repercussions for missing games or practices (obviously missing for legit reasons). We have tackle football, flag football, soccer, basketball, and a wrestler. No repercussions for family vacations. Baseball is not the most important thing in life.

I keep annual fees as low as possible any savings from buying in bulk are passed on to the parents.

I had a coach leave for me not playing daddy ball.

the problem for kids is, is that by and large the best players and coaches are with competitive teams - the cum by ya... of the 90s drove them off in droves.

Looking at the rosters of the the Number 1 ranked 3a, 4a and 5a teams in LA.....

together they have I believe 3 kids that did not play "travel" ball - by age 12.

In my area, if the kid isn't asked to join a travel team, his shite for brains dad just starts his own team so he can say his kid plays. The number of teams in my son's age group went from one to six in 2 years and now the quality of TB is no better than Dixie.

When they start, its all about low fees, local tourny's, and limiting the practice schedule. Within a year, almost all of them are now practicing 2 or 3 times per week and doing out of state tourny's. I see dads in my town walking around fricking adorned from head to toe in name brand TB logo'd shite.

There absolutely are great TB coaches who do it right, but there are many more who are in it for themselves - even though they can't admit it.

Sounds like you were the dumbass that originally got offended, why else would you post your moronic ideas of how other people should raise their children. People are allowed to make their own decisions in this great country, for both themselves and their children. I hope one day somebody can stomach having children with you that way every other person can tell you what your doing wrong and how you should fix it. Was league ball fun when we were kids? Of course it was and for the parents that decide to participate in tournanment ball now, they are having the same fun and so are most kids. Both league and tournament have the exceptions where the kids are forced and that's brutal for all. But not near as brutal as some so called adult telling others how do live their life and spend their hard earned money. Here's hoping you grow up one day.

If you are near a metro area, it isn't that bad. I'm stuck between Memphis, St. Louis, & Little Rock in the middle of nowhere. The St. Louis area kids played in a different town every weekend but still slept in their own beds every night. We spent 2 nights in a shitty hotel eating fast food or sandwiches in the parking lot of the ballpark. I hated it & glad it is over.

From my perspective there were very few coaches that were actually good at coaching and developing. Most of them were always trying to replace the weaker 3 or 4 kids with better kids and then they just took the glory for being a coach.

First off....I'm not telling anyone how to raise their kids. This post is about travel baseball vs. rec ball/school ball. Of the 90 plus responses to this post you, sir, seem to have your little panties in a knot - unlike everyone else who is stating their entitled opinions without gripes. It's my opinion that travel ball leagues are hurting the rec leagues and school leagues for 12 and under children. Lastly, I do have children, I do coach baseball, I've played at the college level, and I hope you can untangle those panties and have a great weekend.

Mine plays middle school ball for his private school. The travel team works their schedule around school ball. Rec ball doesn't start until school ball ends.

We have the for last 3 years and have at least 3 other teams in our league that do the same.. Its tough at times to say the least as we actually play in two leagues.. they only overlap for about 3 weeks and the first one allows us to develop new pitchers and give the usual pitchers a time to work up there arms. I will say we are getting heat in the first league because the competition isnt the best and its a school based rec league but we are a same school team that just happens to play some travel.

I'm glad you had a successful baseball career. I just get really sick of people telling others what they should and shouldn't do. Rec ball has gone the way of mail and newspapers, something that once had a purpose but is now trying to hold on to something long gone. Baseball is a sport that all kids can participate in some fashion or another. I'm not wrong in saying that if you grew up today and choose the rec ball route your baseball career would not have been as successful.
